Jiuzhaigou (Nine Village Valley) is a 720-sq-km national park in northern Sichuan province, 450 km north of Chengdu. The park is a Y-shaped valley of nine Tibetan villages; over 40 million years, mineral-rich water has built up calcium carbonate terraces and travertine dams that turn the lakes into a series of stepped, impossibly blue and turquoise pools. UNESCO World Heritage since 1992. The three main valleys: Shuzheng Valley (the main valley, with Shuzheng Lakes and Nuorilang Waterfall), Rize Valley (the longest, with Five Color Lake and Long Lake), and Zechawa Valley (with the Five Color Pond).
