Jiuzhaigou for foreigners

Five-color lakes, multi-level waterfalls, and a Tibetan valley that UNESCO calls a fairyland.

Jiuzhaigou (Nine Village Valley) is a 720-sq-km national park in northern Sichuan province, 450 km north of Chengdu. The park is a Y-shaped valley of nine Tibetan villages; over 40 million years, mineral-rich water has built up calcium carbonate terraces and travertine dams that turn the lakes into a series of stepped, impossibly blue and turquoise pools. UNESCO World Heritage since 1992. The three main valleys: Shuzheng Valley (the main valley, with Shuzheng Lakes and Nuorilang Waterfall), Rize Valley (the longest, with Five Color Lake and Long Lake), and Zechawa Valley (with the Five Color Pond). Most visitors come as a 2-3 day side trip from Chengdu, or on a long layover on the way to Dunhuang/Zhangjiajie. Best in autumn (October) when the leaves turn gold and the lakes reach their most vivid colors; winter is snowy and quiet.

When to visit Jiuzhaigou

October 15 - November 5 for peak autumn colors. Avoid Chinese National Day (Oct 1-7) β€” extreme crowds. April-May and September are also good. Winter (Dec-Feb) is cold and some high trails may close for ice; the park is dramatically less crowded.
