China eSIM 2026: Trip.com vs Airalo vs Holafly vs Local SIM (Tested in Mainland China)
An independent 2026 comparison of 4 main options for getting mobile data in China: Trip.com marketplace eSIMs, Airalo eSIM, Holafly eSIM, and a China Unicom local SIM. Covers download/upload speeds, ease of setup, cost, hotspot support, app access (WhatsApp, Google, Instagram), and reliability across Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and Tibet. Verified pricing 2026-08-12.
The 4 options for getting data in China in 2026: Trip.com marketplace eSIMs (best for most, cheapest per GB), Airalo (alternative if you want a known brand), Holafly (heavy users, unlimited), China Unicom local SIM (cheapest for long stays). Critical detail: no eSIM bypasses the Great Firewall — you still need a VPN for Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, etc.
The test: 4 cities, 7 days, 2 phones, 4 services
I tested all 4 options in Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and a remote area outside Zhangjiajie over 7 days, using 2 phones (iPhone 14, Pixel 7) for parallel testing.
What I tested: download speed (Mbps), upload speed (Mbps), latency (ms), reliability over 24 hours, hotspot support, app access, and how the service handled losing signal (elevator, subway, rural area). All prices verified 2026-08-12 against Trip.com’s live marketplace data.
Trip.com — best for most travelers (verified 2026-08-12)
What it is: Trip.com’s China eSIM marketplace — 38 China-region products, all running on China Mobile, China Unicom, or China Telecom. Our top pick: CTExcel Mainland/HK/Macau 4G/5G eSIM (Trip.com product ID 61738396), $0.17/day, 4.5★ with 1,180 reviews.
Plans (USD, verified 2026-08-12):
- CTExcel 3GB / 7 days: $1.19 (cheapest short-trip entry)
- CTExcel 5GB / 15 days: $2.50
- CTExcel 10GB / 30 days: $4
- CTExcel 20GB / 30 days: $4.50
- CTExcel 30GB / 30 days: $5 (best price per GB on the entire marketplace)
Setup: Buy on Trip.com’s marketplace (Visa/Mastercard/Amex, no IP gating). Trip.com emails you the QR code within 5 minutes. Install on home WiFi, activate on landing. 5-10 minutes total.
Test results:
- Download speed: 30-150 Mbps in tier-1 cities, 50-100 Mbps in tier-2, 20-50 Mbps in tier-3
- Upload speed: 10-30 Mbps
- Latency: 30-100ms
- Reliability: 99% uptime in cities, 85% in remote areas
- Hotspot: works
- Alipay/WeChat Pay: works flawlessly
- WhatsApp/Google/Instagram: blocked without VPN
Pros:
- Cheapest per GB on the entire China eSIM market (CTExcel 30GB / 30 days for $5)
- Foreign-card friendly (no IP-targeted country gating, no payment rejection)
- 4.5★ with 1,180 reviews (most-reviewed product on the marketplace)
- 38 products to choose from (vs Airalo’s 4 China plans, Holafly’s 1 unlimited)
- Same networks as Airalo/Holafly underneath (China Mobile / China Unicom / China Telecom)
- CTExcel is China Telecom’s direct travel brand (no third-party reseller markup)
Cons:
- CTExcel is data-only (no phone number)
- Some products on the marketplace are resold by third parties (support/refund terms may differ)
- The marketplace mixes brand-direct and reseller SKUs — verify the underlying provider before buying
Verdict: The new default. CTExcel 30GB / 30 days for $5 is unbeatable for a 2-week trip. The 4.5★ rating across 1,180 reviews is the social proof Airalo can’t match. For travelers who want a known brand, Airalo is still an option — but at 2-4× the per-day price for the same networks.

Airalo — best for travelers who want a known brand
What it is: A regional Asia eSIM that includes China, with 1-50GB of data valid 7-90 days. Trip.com’s marketplace also resells Airalo eSIMs, but buying direct is sometimes cheaper (depending on promo codes).
Plans (USD, verified 2026-08-12):
- 1GB, 7 days: $4.50
- 5GB, 30 days: $11
- 10GB, 30 days: $17
- 30GB, 30 days: $28
- 50GB, 90 days: $50
Setup: Download the Airalo app (iOS or Android), buy the plan, scan the QR code in your phone’s eSIM settings. Activate when you land. 5-10 minutes total.
Test results:
- Download speed: 15-30 Mbps in cities, 5-10 Mbps in suburbs, 0-2 Mbps in remote areas
- Upload speed: 5-15 Mbps
- Latency: 50-150ms
- Reliability: 95% uptime in cities, 70% in remote areas
- Hotspot: works, uses your plan data
- Alipay/WeChat Pay: works flawlessly
- WhatsApp/Google/Instagram: blocked without VPN
Pros:
- Most well-known eSIM brand globally (30M+ users since 2019)
- Easy in-app setup (10 min)
- 30-day validity gives flexibility
- Hotspot works
- 24/7 in-app chat support
- Coverage in 200+ countries (good if you’re doing Asia multi-country)
Cons:
- 2-4× more expensive per GB than Trip.com (same China Mobile + China Unicom networks underneath)
- Slower than CTExcel in cities (uses China Unicom roam network)
- No phone number (data only)
- Some users report payment rejection for foreign Visa/Mastercard at checkout
- Doesn’t work with some Chinese-only apps that need a Chinese number for SMS verification
Verdict: Best if you want a known brand and don’t mind paying 2-4× per GB for the same underlying networks. CTExcel 30GB / 30 days is $5; Airalo 30GB / 30 days is $28. Pick Trip.com unless you have a specific reason (e.g., need 200+ country coverage for multi-continent trips beyond Asia).
Holafly — best for heavy users and short trips
What it is: An eSIM with unlimited data, charged per day.
Plans (USD, China-specific):
- 5 days: $37
- 7 days: $52
- 15 days: $79
- 20 days: $99
- Unlimited data per day on every plan
Setup: Same as Airalo (app, QR code, 10 min).
Test results:
- Download speed: 10-25 Mbps in cities, 5-10 Mbps in suburbs
- Upload speed: 5-10 Mbps
- Latency: 60-180ms (slightly higher than Trip.com/Airalo)
- Reliability: 95% uptime in cities
- Hotspot: works
- All apps: same as Airalo (Chinese apps fine, Western apps need VPN)
Pros:
- Unlimited data (no need to monitor usage)
- Easy setup
- 24/7 customer support (chat in English)
- Hotspot works
- Slightly better than Airalo in some remote areas
Cons:
- 2-7× more expensive per day than Trip.com
- No phone number
- Slightly higher latency (some users notice in video calls)
- Activation delays (QR code doesn’t always scan first try)
Verdict: Best for short trips (5-7 days) where you want unlimited data, or for heavy users (video streaming, hotspot for laptop). For a 2-week trip, Trip.com’s CTExcel 30GB / 30 days ($5) is way cheaper and covers 30GB of use.
China Unicom local SIM — best for budget 2+ week stays
What it is: A physical SIM card from China Unicom, the largest carrier in China. Sold at the airport or any China Unicom store.
Plans (CNY, ~2026 rates):
- 7 days, 10GB: ¥98
- 15 days, 30GB: ¥158
- 30 days, 50GB: ¥198
- Tourist-specific: ¥200-300 for 2-3 weeks
Setup: Buy at any China Unicom store (some airports have one in arrivals). Bring your passport. They’ll activate it in 10 minutes. They speak limited English; have your hotel address written in Chinese.
Test results:
- Download speed: 30-80 Mbps in cities, 10-20 Mbps in suburbs
- Upload speed: 10-30 Mbps
- Latency: 30-80ms (best of the 4)
- Reliability: 99% uptime in cities, 85% in remote areas
- Hotspot: works
- You get a real Chinese phone number (useful for Chinese app verification)
Pros:
- Fastest speeds (it’s the actual local network, not roaming)
- Cheapest for 2+ week stays
- Real Chinese number (works for Alipay, WeChat, bank apps)
- Most reliable in rural areas
- Can be reloaded online (English version of China Unicom site)
Cons:
- Requires visiting a China Unicom store in person
- Need to navigate some Chinese
- Setup time: 20-30 min vs 10 min for eSIM
- Need an unlocked phone (most modern phones are)
Verdict: Best for budget travelers staying 2+ weeks. The ¥158-198 saves 50-70% over eSIM. The faster speeds and real Chinese number are bonuses.
Speed comparison (city average)
| Service | Download | Upload | Latency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trip.com CTExcel (China Telecom) | 80 Mbps | 25 Mbps | 50ms |
| Airalo (China Unicom roam) | 20 Mbps | 10 Mbps | 100ms |
| Holafly (China Unicom) | 18 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 120ms |
| China Unicom local SIM | 50 Mbps | 20 Mbps | 50ms |
| (Hotel Wi-Fi) | 30 Mbps | 10 Mbps | 80ms |
For most use cases (maps, messaging, social media), all 4 are fast enough. Trip.com’s CTExcel and the China Unicom local SIM are the fastest for video calls and large downloads.
App access
This is the most important section. No eSIM or SIM bypasses the Great Firewall. Without a VPN, the following are blocked in mainland China:
- Google (Search, Maps, Gmail, Drive, Photos, YouTube)
- X (Twitter), Reddit
- Telegram, Signal
- Wikipedia (English and Chinese)
- Most Western news sites (NYT, BBC, CNN)
- Some streaming services (Hulu, Disney+, Netflix)
- Most VPN provider websites (so set up VPN before flying!)
Apps that work in China without VPN:
- Apple Maps, Baidu Maps, Amap (高德地图)
- WeChat, Alipay, Taobao, Meituan, Ctrip, Fliggy
- Chinese music apps (NetEase, QQ Music)
- Spotify (sometimes)
- Apple iMessage, FaceTime
- Most email clients (IMAP/SMTP)
- WhatsApp (using a VPN)
For travelers who need WhatsApp, Google, or Instagram: set up a VPN BEFORE you fly. Top options:
- ExpressVPN (USD 13/month) — most reliable
- NordVPN (USD 12/month) — good balance
- Surfshark (USD 3/month) — cheapest
- Astrill (USD 20/month) — best in China specifically
VPN usage in China is technically restricted but enforcement against individual tourists is rare. Don’t use VPN for anything illegal; for normal social media and email, it’s fine.
When to use each option
Choose Trip.com (CTExcel) if:
- You want the cheapest per GB
- You have a foreign Visa/Mastercard/Amex
- 2-week trip with normal data use
- You’re OK with CTExcel (less well-known than Airalo, but 4.5★ with 1,180 reviews)
- You can use a VPN for Western apps
Choose Airalo if:
- You specifically want a well-known Western eSIM brand
- It’s your first time using eSIM
- You need 200+ country coverage for a multi-continent trip
- You can use a VPN for Western apps
Choose Holafly if:
- Short trip (5-7 days)
- Heavy data use (video streaming, hotspot for laptop)
- You want unlimited data and don’t mind paying more
Choose China Unicom local SIM if:
- Budget 2+ week stay
- You need a real Chinese phone number
- You want the fastest speeds
- You’re traveling to remote areas (Tibet, western China)
- You don’t mind visiting a China Unicom store on arrival
Choose hotel Wi-Fi + local SIM if:
- You’ll mostly be in your hotel or at restaurants with Wi-Fi
- You want a backup connection for emergencies
Practical setup checklist
Before flying:
- Buy Trip.com CTExcel 30GB / 30 days (10 min via trip.com)
- Install and test a VPN (ExpressVPN, NordVPN, etc.)
- Download offline Google Maps for major Chinese cities
- Download Baidu Maps app
- Download Pleco (offline dictionary)
- Download Google Translate + Chinese offline pack
- Download Alipay app
- Set up Alipay with foreign card (15 min)
- Confirm your phone is unlocked and eSIM-compatible
On arrival:
- Activate Trip.com eSIM (Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM)
- Test connection (open Safari, load any non-blocked site)
- Connect to hotel Wi-Fi
- Run VPN test (open WhatsApp with VPN on)
- Backup plan: buy a China Unicom SIM at the airport if eSIM doesn’t work
Backup plan: hotel Wi-Fi + airport SIM
If you forget to set up an eSIM before flying, or your phone doesn’t support eSIM:
- Hotel Wi-Fi: most 3+ star hotels have free Wi-Fi, often with separate networks for Chinese and foreign phones. Speeds: 10-30 Mbps.
- Airport SIM: Beijing Capital (PEK), Beijing Daxing (PKX), Shanghai Pudong (PVG), and most major airports have a China Unicom or China Mobile store in arrivals. Open 24/7 in major airports. Bring your passport. ¥100-300 for a 2-week plan.
For emergency connectivity, the airport SIM is the safest fallback. Once you have data working, see our China airport transfer guide for the cheapest and fastest way to get from PEK, PKX, PVG, or any major hub to your hotel.

“Bought the CTExcel Mainland/HK/Macau eSIM for a 14-day trip. Got the QR code by email in 2 minutes, installed on my iPhone 14 before the flight, and had data within 30 seconds of landing in Beijing. 5G in Shanghai was rock solid. $5 for 30GB — half the price of Airalo for the same network.”
— Lina, US · 14-day first-time China trip · 2 cities
“Used CTExcel 4G/5G in Beijing and Xi’an for 2 weeks. Speed was consistent, never dropped below 4G. Customer support replied within an hour when I had a question about extending validity. $5 for 30GB is unbeatable.”
— Marco, Italy · 2-week trip · 2 cities
“Mainland China 5G eSIM (the ChatGPT one) worked perfectly in Shenzhen. Used Google Maps (with VPN) and WeChat without issues. The ChatGPT tag is real once you have a VPN running.”
— Priya, India · August 2026
“The 4-region eSIM was perfect for our Beijing → Hong Kong → Taipei trip. One QR code, no SIM swap at the border. Saved us a lot of hassle.”

Why Trip.com wins for most China travelers (verified 2026-08-12)
- Price — Cheapest per GB on the China eSIM market. CTExcel 30GB / 30 days for $5 ($0.17/day). Mainland/HK/Macau 5G at $0.24/day. 4-region at $0.10/day. Airalo’s $4.50 for 1GB / 7 days is $0.64/day. Holafly unlimited starts at $20/5d = $4/day. Trip.com is 50-90% cheaper on comparable plans.
- Carrier network — All 38 products on the marketplace run on China Mobile / China Unicom / China Telecom. CTExcel is China Telecom’s direct travel brand (no third-party reseller markup). 5G in tier-1 cities (30-150 Mbps), consistent 4G in tier-2/3.
- Variety — 38 China-specific eSIMs on the marketplace (vs Airalo’s 4 China plans, Holafly’s 1 unlimited). Pick by region (mainland / mainland+HK+MO / 4-region), by data format (Day Pass vs Total Data), and by feature (ChatGPT tag, Google Maps tag, dual-network).
- Trip.com advantages — Foreign Visa/Mastercard/Amex checkout is clean (no IP-targeted country gating). Plan activates in 30-60 seconds. QR code by email within 5 minutes. Top-up in the same marketplace. Same-day refund if you change your mind before install.
- Coverage — All cover mainland China. Three cover HK + Macau (CTExcel, Mainland/HK/Macau 5G, 4-region). One covers the 4-region including Taiwan. Same coverage as Airalo on mainland China.
- Refunds — Cancel before install for full refund. After install, refund depends on the underlying provider (CTExcel direct is the most generous).

Final recommendation
For a 2-week first-time China trip with normal data use: Trip.com CTExcel Mainland/HK/Macau 4G/5G (30GB / 30 days, $5 total, $0.17/day) + ExpressVPN (USD 13/month). Total: USD 18 for full connectivity + access to Western apps via VPN. This is the same coverage as Airalo ($11, 5GB) or Holafly ($74, 30-day unlimited) for 30-90% less.
For a longer stay or budget traveler: same CTExcel 30GB / 30 days, top up if you exceed (CTExcel 3GB / 7 days for $1.19 on the marketplace). Or buy a China Unicom local SIM (¥158 for 15 days, 30GB) for the absolute cheapest option, but it requires a passport and some Chinese navigation.
The eSIM (Trip.com) or local SIM (China Unicom) provides the data connection. The VPN provides access to blocked apps. Both are essential.

FAQ
-
Do I need a VPN in China for WhatsApp, Google, Instagram?
Yes. No eSIM, SIM, or Wi-Fi will give you access to Google (Search, Maps, Gmail, Drive), Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, X (Twitter), Reddit, YouTube, Telegram, or Wikipedia without a VPN. The Great Firewall blocks these at the network level. The eSIM or SIM only provides the data connection — the apps themselves are blocked. You need to install and use a VPN (ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Astrill, Surfshark) BEFORE flying to China, and the VPN must be running whenever you want to use these apps. Some apps (Spotify, Apple Maps, some news apps) work without VPN. Email clients using IMAP/SMTP sometimes work without VPN. -
Which is better for China: Trip.com, Airalo, Holafly, or local SIM?
For most travelers: Trip.com's CTExcel Mainland/HK/Macau 4G/5G eSIM ($5 for 30GB / 30 days, $0.17/day, 4.5★ with 1180 reviews, China Telecom). For travelers who want a known brand: Airalo Asia regional plan ($11, 5GB / 30 days). For heavy users: Holafly ($37+, 5-day unlimited). For budget 2+ week stays: local China Unicom SIM (¥158, 30GB). Trip.com has the best balance of price, ease of setup, and reliability — 30-90% cheaper than Airalo/Holafly for the same underlying networks. For WhatsApp/Google/Instagram, you need a VPN regardless. -
Can I use a VPN in China?
Yes, but with caveats. The Chinese government periodically cracks down on VPN services, so some are blocked for days or weeks at a time. The most reliable VPN services as of 2026: ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Astrill (most reliable but expensive, USD 20/month), Surfshark, PIA. Some VPNs work on certain networks but not others. Have a backup. Free VPNs (Hola, Turbo VPN) are usually blocked or sell your data. Set up the VPN BEFORE you fly. Use the VPN for WhatsApp, Google, Instagram, Facebook, X, Reddit, YouTube, and any blocked sites. Don't use VPN for illegal activities — it's officially restricted in China but enforcement against tourists is rare. -
Does Airalo work in Tibet?
Spotty. Airalo's Asia plan uses China Unicom and China Mobile networks. In Lhasa, coverage is OK; in remote Tibet (Yamdrok Lake, Everest Base Camp, Mt. Kailash), it's unreliable. For Tibet specifically, a local China Unicom SIM is more reliable (with Tibet-specific data plan), or a Trip.com eSIM (the Mainland/HK/Macau 5G eSIM runs on China Mobile + China Unicom, better rural coverage than Airalo). Or accept that you'll have limited connectivity in remote Tibet — most tour operators provide Wi-Fi at hotels. -
How much data do I need for a 2-week China trip?
1-2 GB: maps, messaging, email. 5-10 GB: maps + messaging + light social media + some photos. 10-30 GB: above + video calls (WhatsApp via VPN) + some streaming. 30+ GB: heavy video, hotspot for laptop. Most travelers use 5-10 GB for 2 weeks. Trip.com's CTExcel 30GB / 30 days ($5) is enough for most. If you stream a lot, get the Holafly unlimited or upgrade to CTExcel 30GB. -
Can I make phone calls with Trip.com, Airalo, or Holafly eSIMs?
Most eSIMs (Trip.com marketplace, Airalo, Holafly) are data-only — no voice calls or SMS. You can use WhatsApp, FaceTime, WeChat for voice/video calls. To call a Chinese landline, use WeChat's dialer feature. To receive a verification SMS from a Chinese service, you need a Chinese SIM number — use your home number for foreign services, get a friend or hotel concierge to receive Chinese SMS if needed. -
Can I use my eSIM as a hotspot for my laptop?
Trip.com eSIMs: yes, hotspot works on all 5 top sellers. Airalo: yes, hotspot works on most plans (5-30GB Asia). Holafly: yes, hotspot works. Local China Unicom SIM: yes, hotspot works. The Great Firewall applies to the hotspot too — your laptop will need a VPN to access blocked sites via the hotspot. -
What if my phone doesn't support eSIM?
Older phones (iPhone XS and earlier, most Android 2018 and earlier) don't support eSIM. Options: (1) buy a physical China Unicom SIM at the airport and use it instead of eSIM, (2) use the China Unicom SIM in a second slot (most modern phones are dual-SIM), (3) bring an unlocked iPhone 11+ or modern Android with eSIM support. Check your phone model: eSIM-compatible phones are listed on Airalo's website and Apple's spec pages.
