Dalian is the most livable city in northeast China — a 7-million-resident coastal metropolis on the southern tip of the Liaodong Peninsula in Liaoning Province. Built by the Russians in 1898 as their Pacific port, then run by the Japanese until 1945, Dalian has more European architecture per capita than almost any other Chinese city outside Harbin. Russian baroque, Japanese neoclassical, and 1950s Soviet apartment blocks all sit within a few blocks. The reason most foreigners come: the coastline. Dalian has 100+ km of golden-sand beaches within an hour of the city center (Jinshitan, Fujiazhuang, Bangchui Island), Asia's largest city square (Xinghai Square, 1.76 million m²), and a marine theme park (Laohutan) with beluga whales, polar bears, and the only Chinese-built penguin beach. Climate: humid subtropical, summer 22-26°C, winter -3 to 3°C — a beach destination from May to October, and the only northeast Chinese city that doesn't feel like Siberia in January.

A 0.3-sq-km forested islet 600 m off the coast, named for the wooden pestle-shaped rock on its peak. China's #1 state guesthouse is on the islet (closed to public, but the surrounding beach and 2.6-km seafront promenade are open). ¥20 entry to the scenic area; the beach is free. Allow half a day.

A 50-million-year-old geological formation 50 km north of the city, named for the unusual rock shapes sculpted by wind and sea. The 'golden pebble beach' has 4-km of sand and is China's first national geopark (2005). Plus a Discovery Kingdom theme park (¥230, full day) and a wax museum. A 500-m stretch of restored Russian baroque buildings from 1898-1904, on the southern edge of Zhongshan Square. Today it's a pedestrian shopping street with Russian goods (matryoshka dolls, vodka, chocolates), cafes, and a small Russian history museum (¥30). Best in late afternoon when the golden hour hits the onion domes. Free to walk; allow 1-2 hours.

Dalian's deep-water port 50 km south, the site of the 1904-05 Russo-Japanese War. Now home to the Lüshun Museum (¥30, China's best military museum), the Japanese-Russian Prison (¥25, restored WWII POW site), and a 6-km cherry blossom boulevard (peak early May). Search ⟦city.dalian⟧ on Trip.com →June–September for the beaches (22-26°C, sea-swimmable from late June). May and October for hiking and the maple fall colors, fewer crowds. The Dalian International Beer Festival runs mid-July to early August (Asia's largest, founded 1990). Winter is mild by northeast standards (-3 to 3°C) but the coast is not beach-swimmable — most attractions stay open year-round though.
