Hong Kong is the easiest major city in China for first-time foreign visitors — signs and menus in English and Traditional Chinese, the MTR metro is the cleanest and most foreigner-friendly in the country, and the 240-hour visa-free transit rules let you do a side trip from the mainland without a separate visa. It's also its own system: Hong Kong dollar (HKD), not RMB; Cantonese, not Mandarin; left-hand driving, even though the trains run on the right. Allow that mental switch.\n\nThe city splits into Hong Kong Island (Central, Wan Chai, Causeway Bay, the Peak), Kowloon (Tsim Sha Tsui, Mongkok, Yau Ma Tei), and the New Territories (Disneyland, the Big Buddha, the airport). Most first-timers spend 3-4 days across the first two, with one day for Lantau Island.
