Why you must download in Korea

Once you land in mainland China, your phone is on a Chinese mobile network. The Great Firewall (GFC) blocks Google Play, Apple iTunes (mostly works), Gmail, Google Maps, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Reddit, and Wikipedia (sometimes).

You CAN still use the App Store — Apple is permitted in China and the App Store works normally. But many of the apps you need (like Alipay, WeChat, Didi) install more reliably from your home Korean network because the SMS verification is easier to receive.

Do this at home, in Korea, on your own Wi-Fi, with VPN off.

How to set up each app (Korean cardholders)

Alipay setup

1. Download from Google Play
2. Register with +82 Korean phone number
3. Verify passport (Korean passport OCR scan)
4. Add Visa or Mastercard (any Korean bank works — Shinhan, Samsung, Hyundai, KakaoBank)
5. Set 6-digit payment password

WeChat setup

1. Download from Google Play
2. Register with +82 Korean phone number
3. May need a friend with existing WeChat to scan a QR for new account security check
4. Me → Services → Wallet → Add Card → Visa/Mastercard

Didi setup (滴滴出行)

1. Download from Google Play
2. Register with +82 Korean phone number
3. Add Visa/Mastercard for payment
4. Verify with passport (only for first ride, automatic)

Didi is the Chinese Uber. Open the app, type your destination in English or Chinese, the app shows a map and a price estimate, and a driver arrives in 2-5 minutes. See the full Didi guide for screenshots and tips.

Amap setup (高德地图)

1. Download from Google Play
2. No registration required — open and use
3. Switch to English: Profile → Settings → Language → English
4. Search for “Beijing Capital Airport” or any English name
5. Use the navigation for walking, driving, public transit

Amap is the Chinese Google Maps. It has accurate data for all of China, including addresses in Chinese characters (which you need to show taxi drivers). The English interface is functional but not pretty.

Trip.com setup

1. Download from Google Play
2. Register with +82 Korean phone number or email
3. Add Visa/Mastercard
4. Use to book hotels, high-speed rail tickets (12306), flights, attraction tickets

Trip.com is the only major booking platform that accepts Korean cards for high-speed rail tickets and offers English customer support 24/7.
