Wuzhen Water Town: The Complete Day-Trip Guide from Hangzhou (2026)

Wuzhen (乌镇) is a 1,300-year-old canal town 1.5 hours from Hangzhou. This guide covers how to get there, East vs West scenic zones, the iconic boat rides at night, ticket prices, and how to avoid the tour-bus crowds.

Wuzhen (乌镇) is the best-preserved water town in the Jiangnan region — the area south of the Yangtze delta where canals, stone bridges, and whitewashed houses have been the landscape for a thousand years. It is 1.5 hours by bus from Hangzhou and gets around 10 million visitors a year, but the smart visit (overnight, off-peak, walking the morning quiet) still feels like stepping into a 14th-century Chinese painting. For how to fit it into a full Hangzhou trip, see our 3-day Hangzhou itinerary.

The town sits on the Grand Canal (京杭大运河, UNESCO World Heritage since 2014). It was founded in 872 AD as a textile trading post and never changed its name, location, or street grid in 1,300 years — the only major Chinese old town with that distinction. Wuzhen is also the permanent host of the World Internet Conference (世界互联网大会), held here every November since 2014.

The 4 zones

Wuzhen divides into 4 quadrants by canals:

  • Dongzha (东栅, “East”) — ¥110, the more authentic working town with original residents still living in some houses. Smaller, more walkable, more food stalls.
  • Xizha (西栅, “West”) — ¥150, the larger restored zone, mostly turned into boutique inns, restaurants, and museums. This is where you should stay.
  • Nanzha (南栅) — Free, the un-restored residential area. Few facilities, less polished, more real.
  • Beizha (北栅) — Free, also residential and un-restored.

The 2 paid zones (Dongzha + Xizha) are what tour groups visit. The 2 free zones are where you see the town as it is, not as it is packaged for tourism.

How to get there from Hangzhou

By bus (cheapest, most scenic):

  • From Hangzhou East Bus Station (杭州汽车东站), direct buses to Wuzhen every 30-60 minutes, 1.5 hours, ¥35-45.
  • First bus 7:00 AM, last return bus 7:30 PM. Buy tickets at the station or via WeChat mini-program.
  • Get off at Wuzhen Bus Station (乌镇汽车站), 5 minutes by free shuttle to either scenic zone.

By HSR + transfer (fastest):

  • HSR from Hangzhou East to Tongxiang (桐乡) is 30 min, ¥38 second class.
  • Then bus or taxi from Tongxiang to Wuzhen: 30 min, ¥15 bus or ¥80 taxi.
  • Total door-to-door: 1.5 hours. Same as the direct bus.

By car (with driver):

  • A private driver from Hangzhou costs ¥400-600 round trip including 2 hours of waiting time. Worth it for 3+ people. Book through Trip.com or your hotel.

By tour group (easiest):

  • Day trips from Hangzhou run ¥250-400 per person including bus, ticket, lunch, and English-speaking guide. Klook and Trip.com both list options.

What to do

East zone (Dongzha) — 3 hours

Enter from the south gate, walk the canal-side main street. Highlights:

  • 100 Beds Museum (百床馆) — collection of Ming- and Qing-era wooden beds
  • Hongyuantai Dyehouse (宏源泰染坊) — traditional indigo blue-dye workshop, you can buy a dyed scarf for ¥40
  • Mao Dun’s Former Residence (茅盾故居) — the home of the 20th-century novelist who won a Lenin Prize
  • Old Stage (乌镇古戏台) — free, occasional performances
  • Xiu Zhen Temple (修真观) — a Taoist temple

West zone (Xizha) — overnight

Enter from the west gate. Bigger, more spread out, more atmospheric at night. The west zone is also where the boats run after dark.

Key sites:

  • Wuzhen Grand Theater (乌镇大剧院) — modern riverside building worth a photo
  • Mu Xin Art Museum (木心美术馆) — designed by OMA/Rem Koolhaas; collection of the writer/painter Mu Xin (¥20)
  • Silk Museum (乌镇丝绸博物馆) — full silk production process, free
  • Old Post Office (乌镇老邮局) — still-operating 1900s post office, you can mail a postcard
  • Dyeing workshop (草木本色染坊) — outdoor vats of indigo, the most-photographed spot
  • Night boat ride — the highlight. ¥180/boat for 4-6 people, 25 min, goes through the lit-up bridges. Book at any dock.

Where to stay

Xizha has dozens of restored Ming-Qing courtyard inns. Prices jump in November (Internet Conference) and Chinese holidays.

  • Budget (¥400-600/night): Wuzhen Yin Xin Hotel, Tongsheng Yuan Inn — basic courtyard rooms, shared facilities possible
  • Mid-range (¥600-1,200/night): Wuzhen Club House, Wuzhen Water Town Hotel — restored courtyards, river views
  • Upscale (¥1,500-3,500/night): Alila Wuzhen (design hotel), Shinetown Wuzhen — modern luxury in restored buildings

Book 1-2 weeks ahead for weekends and holidays. For Tuesday/Wednesday in October–December, often available 1-2 days out.

Best time of day

The Wuzhen trick is staying overnight. Here is the rhythm:

  • 2 PM: Arrive, check in
  • 3-6 PM: Walk the west zone, get oriented, take photos in daylight
  • 6-8 PM: Sunset, dinner at a canal-side restaurant
  • 8-10 PM: Night boat ride, walk the lit-up bridges
  • 10 PM-12 AM: Sit by the canal, see stars
  • 6-8 AM: Next morning — the magic. Tour groups have not arrived. The bridges are empty. The water is still.
  • 10 AM: Check out, head to bus

Food

Wuzhen specialties:

  • Dongshan lamb (东山羊) — a Hangzhou-area breed raised on the hills near Wuzhen
  • Wuzhen braised pork (乌镇酱肉) — slow-cooked, sweet-savory
  • Sister-in-law’s rice cake (姑嫂饼) — local snack, soft and sweet
  • Sanbai wine (三白酒) — a local rice liquor, 50-60% ABV, 100+ year recipe

Avoid: The restaurants at the main gate are tourist-trap. Walk 10 minutes in and you will find half the price.

Wuzhen vs. the other water towns

  • vs. Zhouzhuang (周庄): Zhouzhuang is closer to Suzhou (1.5 hours), more compact, more day-trip friendly. Wuzhen is more spread out but better for overnight.
  • vs. Tongli (同里): Tongli is the smallest, easiest half-day visit. Wuzhen has more variety but needs more time.
  • vs. Xitang (西塘): Xitang is in Zhejiang (closer to Shanghai), known for its night lanterns and bars. Wuzhen is more refined, more museum-like.
  • vs. Luzhi (甪直): Luzhi is in Suzhou, the most “lived-in” of the water towns with original residents. Best for repeat visitors.

If you have time for only one: Wuzhen, overnight. The water-town overnight is a popular add-on for a Hangzhou honeymoon or a 6-day Shanghai + Hangzhou + Wuzhen Yangtze-delta loop.

What to skip

  • The “dragon robe” costume photo sessions (you can rent a costume and pose for photos around town; ¥80-300) — these are tacky and break the spell
  • The “Wuzhen Bar Street” section in Xizha — out of character with the town
  • The “Wuzhen Impression” performance (大型实景演出) — over-priced tourist show

FAQ

Is Wuzhen accessible by HSR? Yes, Tongxiang station is 30 min from Hangzhou, then 30 min by bus. Faster than the direct bus.

Should I book the boat ride in advance? For weekends and holidays, yes — through the Wuzhen tourism site. Weekdays, walk-up is fine.

Can I leave and re-enter? Yes — the ticket is multi-entry for the same calendar day. Stay overnight in a Xizha inn, you can re-enter the next morning.

Is Wuzhen stroller-friendly? Mostly — the streets are flat stone, but the bridges have 5-15 step climbs. Some Xizha alleys are very narrow.

What about rain? Wuzhen in light rain is iconic (the canals, the reflections). Bring a clear umbrella. The covered walkways in Xizha help. After Wuzhen, most travelers continue north to West Lake in Hangzhou (1.5 hr back) for the lake-and-tea-village finale.

Step by step

  1. Take the bus or HSR from Hangzhou

Direct bus from Hangzhou East Bus Station to Wuzhen: 1.5 hours, ¥35-45, every 30-60 min from 7 AM. Or HSR to Tongxiang (30 min, ¥38) then bus or taxi (30 min, ¥15-80). Both arrive at Wuzhen Bus Station, 5 min by free shuttle.

  2. Pick East for a day trip, West for overnight

Dongzha (东栅, ¥110) is the more authentic working town — feasible as a day trip in 3-4 hours. Xizha (西栅, ¥150) is the prettier, more atmospheric zone, but the magic is at night, so it is much better as an overnight.

  3. Check in to a Xizha courtyard inn

Book 1-2 weeks ahead for weekends and holidays. Budget ¥400-600/night at Tongsheng Yuan Inn, mid-range ¥600-1,200/night at Wuzhen Club House, upscale ¥1,500-3,500/night at Alila Wuzhen. The ticket is multi-entry for your stay.

  4. Walk the canal alleys at golden hour

In Xizha, hit the Mu Xin Art Museum (¥20), the Old Post Office (send a postcard), the indigo Dyeing Workshop (most-photographed spot), and the riverside Wuzhen Grand Theater. In Dongzha, see the 100 Beds Museum, Hongyuantai Dyehouse, and Mao Dun's Former Residence.

  5. Take the night boat ride

The Xizha night boat through the lantern-lit bridges is the highlight. ¥180/boat for 4-6 people, 25 minutes. Book at any dock, or in advance through the Wuzhen tourism site for weekends. Stay out past 10 PM to see stars over the canal.

FAQ

  • Yes, but only if you pick the right zone. East (Dongzha) is feasible as a day trip — 1.5 hours each way, 3-4 hours in town. West (Xizha) is the prettier zone but the magic is at night, so it is much better as an overnight. The combined East + West ticket is ¥190 but only valid for one day, so it forces a rushed visit.
  • Dongzha (East) ¥110, Xizha (West) ¥150, combined ¥190 (one day only). Boat ride in Xizha ¥60/person one-way, or ¥180/boat for 4-6 people. A Xizha courtyard inn runs ¥400-800/night. A day trip from Hangzhou is realistically ¥300-400 including bus + ticket + lunch.
  • Not really — they are 90 minutes apart. Wuzhen is best with an overnight; Tongli is closer to Suzhou and is a day trip from there.
  • The center of Xizha is heavily commercialized — yes. But stay overnight and you get the morning calm (7-9 AM) when most tour groups have not arrived. East (Dongzha) is more authentic and has fewer shops.
