The brewery that started when Germany occupied Qingdao in 1898

The Tsingtao Beer Museum is on the site of the original Germania Brewery, founded in 1903 by German and British settlers after Germany occupied Qingdao in 1898. The brewery used German Hallertau hops and Bohemian malt to brew a pilsner that won gold at the 1904 Munich Beer Festival. After Japan took Qingdao in 1914 (during WWI), the brewery changed hands multiple times; by 1949 it was producing 1,200 tons of beer a year, and today Tsingtao is China’s most-exported beer — 70+ countries, 9 million hectoliters annually.

The museum is in the original 1903 brewery building, with the factory’s signature clock tower and four green beer cans on the roof — the most-photographed building in Qingdao. The tour walks through the original brew room, the workers’ tunnels, the modern packaging line, and ends in the tasting room where you can try the unfiltered (原浆 yuánjiāng), the draft (纯生 chúnshēng), and the dark (黑啤 hēipí) side by side.

The Tsingtao Beer Museum is well-set-up for foreign travelers. The ¥60 basic ticket (or ¥90 premium) is sold at the counter, with international Visa/Mastercard accepted. The English audio guide is genuinely good — 60 minutes of clear English content. The tasting room is adults-only and includes 2 glasses of fresh unfiltered Tsingtao with the premium ticket. The whole experience takes 1.5-2 hours.

The main thing to know: the ¥60 basic ticket only gives you 1 small pour in the gift shop. The ¥90 premium is the better value — 2 glasses of fresh unfiltered beer in the tasting room, where you can compare the original 1903-style with the modern draft. If you drink beer at all, get the premium.

The 1903 history: how the brewery was founded

The Germania Brewery was founded by German and British settlers in 1903, three years after Germany leased Qingdao from the Qing dynasty for 99 years. The founders hired German brewers from Hamburg and shipped the first batches of Hallertau hops from Bavaria. The brewery’s name was 汉斯·克里斯蒂安·奥古斯特·英德 (the four founders’ surnames) — eventually shortened to Tsingtao, the German spelling of Qingdao. By 1914, when Japan took the city, the brewery was producing 1,500 tons of beer a year.

After 1949, the brewery was nationalized and renamed 国营青岛啤酒厂. The recipe was modified to use Chinese rice as an adjunct (cheaper, lighter), which became the modern Tsingtao taste. The unfiltered (原浆 yuánjiāng) sold at the museum is brewed without the rice, using only the 1903-style malt and hops — the closest you can get to the original German pilsner.

The Beer Festival: when to go for the big event

The Qingdao International Beer Festival (青岛国际啤酒节) runs the second half of August, usually 16 days. It’s Asia’s largest beer festival, with over 1,000 beers from 40+ countries, multiple music stages, and a special Tsingtao area. The main venue is the Golden Beach Beer City (金沙滩啤酒城), with admission free but beer ¥30-60 a glass. The festival dates back to 1991 and now attracts 6 million visitors per year. Avoid the museum during the festival — it’s too crowded to enjoy. Instead, visit the museum a week before or after, then attend the festival for the evening events.

Final tip

Do the 8:30am opening. The museum is empty until 10am, the light is good for photos in the original brew room, and the tasting room is quiet enough to actually talk to the bartenders. By 11am, the tour buses arrive and the place becomes chaos. The 8:30-10:30am window is the magic time.
