Tang Dynasty Show at Tang Paradise

The ‘Dream Chang’an’ (梦长安) Tang Dynasty show at Tang Paradise is Xi’an’s most popular evening entertainment — a 90-minute Tang-dynasty music-and-dance performance with 200+ costumed performers, held nightly in a Tang-themed cultural park 4 km east of the Big Wild Goose Pagoda.

The show is touristy but tasteful: the production values are high, the costumes and choreography are based on Tang-era art, and the dumpling banquet (optional add-on) is a fun cultural experience. For travelers who want a relaxed evening that ends with a deep, sensory impression of Tang-dynasty aesthetics, the show is the best option in Xi’an.

What to expect

The show is staged in a 1,000-seat theater inside the Tang Paradise cultural park. The set is Tang-revival: lacquered wood columns, hanging silk lanterns, and a backdrop of a Tang palace courtyard. The 200+ performers rotate through 8-10 acts that trace Tang court life, imperial banquets, Silk Road cultural exchange, and Tang poetry.

The music is performed live on traditional Chinese instruments — pipa, guzheng, erhu, dizi, plus Tang-revival reconstructions of older instruments. The dance styles are based on Tang-era frescoes and court records: long-sleeve dances, ribbon dances, and the slow imperial court dance that is now a Chinese cultural symbol. Costumes are reconstructed from Tang paintings and are visually striking.

English subtitles are projected above the stage throughout. Photography is allowed during the opening procession but not during the main performance. The total runtime is 90 minutes with no intermission.

The dumpling banquet

The dumpling banquet (¥100-280 add-on) is a Tang-themed dinner served in a dining hall before the show. The menu features 12-18 varieties of dumplings, reflecting the Tang-dynasty staple of dumplings in northern China. Side dishes are a few cold vegetable plates and a soup. The dumplings are decent but the experience is the highlight: costumed servers, Tang-era music in the background, and a quiet pre-show atmosphere.

The banquet takes 60-75 minutes. Show-only ticket holders arrive at 7:30 PM; banquet guests arrive at 7:00 PM. Both are seated in the same theater for the show.

Tang Paradise park

Tang Paradise (大唐芙蓉园, Dàtáng Fúróngyuán) is a large Tang-themed cultural park built in 2005 on the south side of the Qujiang Pool. The park is a 100-acre garden complex with Tang-revival architecture: arched bridges, lakeside pavilions, pagoda silhouettes, and willow-lined paths. The park is open during the day (¥120 ticket) and lit up at night for the show crowd.

If you have a late afternoon, the park is beautiful in golden hour (5-6 PM). After the show (10 PM), the lit gardens are atmospheric for a 15-minute walk before the taxi queue.

Is it worth it?

For most travelers, yes — the show is the most relaxed evening in Xi’an and a useful counterweight to the day’s temple-and-museum intensity. The cultural hook is real: you leave with a much better sense of Tang-dynasty aesthetics than any museum visit provides.

It is not worth it if you have very limited time and prefer quieter cultural experiences. The Shaanxi History Museum is a more authentic (and less touristy) way to engage with Tang culture during the day, and you can skip the evening performance without missing the essence of Xi’an.

For a 3-day Xi’an itinerary, the show is a good Day 1 or Day 2 evening activity after a full day of sightseeing. The dumpling banquet is worth the upgrade if you have the appetite and time; the show-only ticket is fine for a more streamlined evening.
