The mountain that inspired a Hollywood blockbuster

Tianmen Mountain (天门山, “Heaven’s Gate Mountain”) is the most-visited single attraction in the Zhangjiajie region, with 4+ million visitors per year. The mountain rises 1,518 m above the city, dominated by the iconic Tianmen Cave — a 131-meter natural arch in the cliff face, formed by natural collapse in 263 AD. The mountain has been a sacred site for centuries; modern tourism began in 1999 when a Slovenian BASE jumper famously parachuted through the cave.

The mountain’s three signature experiences: the world’s longest passenger cableway (7,455 m, 40 minutes from city to summit); the 99-bend mountain road (11 km of switchbacks climbing 1,100 vertical meters); and the glass skywalk on the west peak (60 m long, suspended 1,400 m above the valley).

The foreigner experience in 2026

Tianmen Mountain is one of the most foreigner-friendly attractions in China. The cable car and 99-bend road are included in the standard ¥261 ticket, the entrance gate accepts foreign passports, and the summit has English signage and audio guides in English. The main challenges: the cable car line can be 30-60 min long on weekends, and the summit is 1,500 m above the city (10°C cooler than the city, fog after 3 PM).

For first-timers, the recommended approach: arrive at 07:30 sharp, take the cable car up, descend the 999 steps to Tianmen Cave, take the 99-bend bus to the west peak for the glass skywalk, walk to the east peak via the Sky Ladder, and descend by cable car. Allow 6-8 hours total.

What to actually see

Three things stand out. The Tianmen Cave is the showpiece — a 131-meter natural arch with a 60-meter width, framed by the 999 steps leading down to the viewing platform. The cave is at the end of the 99-bend mountain road; you can take the bus to the top, then descend the steps. The glass skywalk on the west peak is the most-photographed spot on the mountain — a 60-m glass-bottom walkway over a 1,400-m cliff. The east peak viewpoint gives a 360° view of Zhangjiajie city, the Wulingyuan pillars, and the surrounding mountains — the only place you can see the entire region in one frame.

The world’s longest passenger cableway

The Tianmen Mountain cable car is the world’s longest passenger cableway at 7,455 m (4.6 miles). It was completed in 2005 and runs from the lower station in Zhangjiajie city to the upper station on the summit. The 40-minute ride is itself an attraction — the views get progressively more dramatic as the cable car climbs 1,277 m, passing through clouds, then emerging above the cloud layer for the final approach to the summit.

The cable car has a backup plan: in heavy fog, the operators run a slower schedule but the cable car doesn’t close. In high winds (>50 km/h), the cable car closes for safety. The 99-bend mountain bus is a separate transport option; the bus road can close in winter for ice.

Final tip

The biggest mistake first-timers make: arriving after 10 AM. The cable car line can be 30-60 min long, and the 99-bend road bus can be even longer. The other mistake: skipping the glass skywalk. The ¥10 add-on is the most-photographed spot on the mountain and the most memorable experience. The third mistake: leaving the summit before noon. The east peak viewpoint at golden hour (5-6 PM in summer) gives the most dramatic lighting for the Wulingyuan pillars.
