Sanya for foreigners

China's only tropical city, with year-round beach weather and the 108m Guanyin statue.

Sanya sits at the southern tip of Hainan island, China's only tropical province. Year-round temperatures: 25-30°C. The 209-km coastline has 5 main bays — Yalong Bay is the best beach (1.7 km of white sand, hotel zone), Dadonghai is the central-city beach, Haitang is the resort / duty-free shopping area, and Sanya Bay is the most local. The water is clear, the seafood is fresh, and the cost is one-third of comparable tropical destinations like Phuket or Bali. Beyond the beaches: Nanshan Temple has the 108-meter Guanyin statue (one of the tallest statues in the world), Wuzhizhou Island is a 30-minute ferry for coral reef snorkeling, and Tianya Haijiao ('Edge of the Sky') is the iconic coastal rock monument 25 km west. Sanya is also the main port for ferries to the Xisha Islands (Paracel) — but those require a Chinese travel permit and are not visitor-friendly.
