Guilin & Li River Scenic Guide: Cruises, Karst, Yangshuo, Longji (2026)

Guilin and the Li River in Guangxi is a karst landscape of limestone peaks, bamboo-lined rivers, and ancient villages. This guide covers the Li River cruise vs Yangshuo cycling decision, the Longji Rice Terraces, Reed Flute Cave, and how to plan 3-5 days.

Guilin (桂林, Guìlín, meaning “forest of sweet osmanthus”) in northeastern Guangxi is one of the most-photographed landscapes in China. The city sits on the Li River, surrounded by 1,000+ limestone karst peaks that rise abruptly from flat rice paddies. The landscape has been a subject of Chinese painting since the Tang dynasty; in the 20th century, the area became a setting for the film The Painted Veil (2006) and countless ink-wash landscape reproductions.

The Li River runs 83 km from Guilin to Yangshuo, and the cruise between the two is the single most-iconic boat ride in China. The karst landscape, the bamboo rafts, the cormorant fishermen, and the misty morning light combine into the scenes that appear on the ¥20 banknote and in half of all Chinese landscape paintings.

The region also has two of China’s most-photographed rice terrace systems (Longji) and one of its best limestone caves (Reed Flute Cave). The 5-day plan covers all three. For how Guilin’s karst compares to the rest of China’s UNESCO-listed scenery, see our scenic wonders compared roundup.

How to plan your 3- to 5-day trip

Option A: 3 days (the classic route)

  • Day 1 — Guilin city. Reed Flute Cave morning, Elephant Trunk Hill afternoon, sunset at Liberation Bridge.
  • Day 2 — Li River cruise. Morning boat from Zhujiang Wharf, arrive Yangshuo by 2 PM, West Street evening.
  • Day 3 — Yangshuo. Cycling loop (Moon Hill + Yulong River) or cooking class + West Street.
  • Day 1-2 same as above.
  • Day 3: Yangshuo slow day — rock climbing, cooking class, or a slow Yulong River raft.
  • Day 4: Half-day at Longji Rice Terraces, return to Guilin for the night, or take the night flight home from Guilin airport.

Option C: 5 days (with Longji overnight)

  • Day 1-2: Guilin + Li River cruise as above.
  • Day 3: Longji bus from Guilin, stay overnight in a Yao village guesthouse.
  • Day 4: Hike Longji terraces, return to Yangshuo by 4 PM.
  • Day 5: Yangshuo cycling, West Street, evening flight home.

Li River cruise — the central decision

The Li River cruise is the single most-booked experience in Guilin. Three options:

1. The 4-hour cruise (Guilin to Yangshuo)

  • Boat type: 4-star (¥215) and 5-star (¥450). The 4-star has indoor and outdoor seating, simple boxed lunch. The 5-star has a glass roof, restaurant, and reclining seats.
  • Length: 4 hours, 83 km.
  • Highlights: Yellow Cloth Shoal (the 20-RMB view), Nine-Horse Fresco Hill, Xingping Ancient Town, the cormorant fishermen.
  • Departure: Daily at 9:00 AM from Zhujiang Wharf in downtown Guilin. Confirm pickup point — some hotels include transfer.
  • Book: 3-7 days ahead via Trip.com (foreign cards accepted, ¥230-280 with service fee), or at the wharf ticket office 1-2 days ahead.

2. The 90-min bamboo raft (Yangshuo to Xingping)

  • Boat type: Motorized bamboo raft (4 people per raft), poled by a local.
  • Length: 90 min, 20 km.
  • Highlights: Same 20-RMB view, but smaller and more agile — you can stop anywhere.
  • Departure: Daily, on demand from Yangshuo Wharf (Yangshuo town center).
  • Book: Same-day at the wharf, or via your hotel. ¥150 per raft (4 people), ¥200 with the cormorant photo session.

3. The 60-min Yulong River bamboo raft (Yangshuo)

  • Boat type: Motorized bamboo raft (2 people per raft).
  • Length: 60-90 min, 4-6 km.
  • Highlights: Calmer, smaller river, more local, no big-boat traffic. The best for relaxation.
  • Book: At any Yulong River dock in Yangshuo. ¥150-200 per raft.

Which to choose: If you have one day, the 4-hour cruise. If you have a slow Yangshuo day, add the Yulong River raft. Skip the bamboo raft to Xingping — the cruise does the same route, with much better views.

Yangshuo — the base for the Li River area

Yangshuo (阳朔, Yángshuò) is the small town at the end of the Li River cruise. It is the base for cycling, rock climbing, cooking classes, and the bamboo-raft rides. West Street (西街, Xījiē) is the 1,400-year-old pedestrian street — bars, restaurants, craft shops. The town has more English signage and more foreigner-tour-oriented businesses than Guilin. Many travelers pair Yangshuo with the Hunan Zhangjiajie pillars on a 5-7 day combo — see our Yangshuo + Zhangjiajie add-on for the routing.

Top things to do in Yangshuo:

  • Cycling — 20-km loop Yangshuo → Moon Hill → Yulong River → Yangshuo. Flat, paved back roads. Bike rental ¥20-40/day from any hotel.
  • Rock climbing — Yangshuo is one of the top 3 rock-climbing destinations in Asia. New Delta, China Climb, and the White Monkey offer half-day and full-day courses for beginners (¥400-800 with equipment). The limestone cliffs are 30-100m tall.
  • Impression Liu Sanjie (印象刘三姐) — outdoor night show by Zhang Yimou, 600+ performers on the Li River. 70 minutes, ¥238-498. Worth it if you like spectacle.
  • Cooking class — Yangshuo Cooking School, Chilli Cool China. ¥200-300 for 3 hours including market visit and a full meal.
  • Moon Hill — natural arch in the karst landscape, 20 min bike from town, ¥15 ticket. Climb the 30-min trail to the top for 360° views.
  • Yulong River bamboo raft — see above.

Longji Rice Terraces — the side trip

The Longji (Dragon’s Backbone) Rice Terraces (龙脊梯田) are 100 km north of Guilin, 2.5 hours by bus. The terraces cascade from 300m to 1,100m and are worked by Zhuang and Yao ethnic minority villages that have been cultivating them for 700 years. The most-photographed sections are Ping An village (most developed, the 7-km “Seven Stars with Moon” hike) and Dazhai village (more authentic, the cable car covers the steepest section). Longji is the easier of the two great Chinese terrace systems — the more dramatic and remote alternative is the Yuanyang Rice Terraces in Yunnan.

Best time to visit:

  • Late April-May: rice transplanting, water-filled terraces reflect the sky like mirrors.
  • Mid-July: green growing season.
  • Late September-mid October: golden harvest terraces.
  • December-February: occasional snow, magical but cold (1-5°C).

Tickets: ¥95 per village. Ping An cable car ¥60-80 (one-way).

Stay: Yao or Zhuang wooden guesthouses in either village, ¥150-300/night including dinner and breakfast. The terraced views from the room are the main draw.

Warning: The 2.5-hour bus ride is on winding mountain roads. Take motion-sickness pills if you are prone. The bus from Guilin North Bus Station leaves at 8:00 AM and returns from Longji at 4:00 PM (¥50 each way).

Getting there and around

By air: Guilin Liangjiang International Airport (KWL). 28 km from city center. Direct flights from Beijing (2h 30m), Shanghai (2h 30m), Guangzhou (1h 10m), Shenzhen (1h 20m), Hong Kong (1h 30m), Bangkok (3h), Singapore (4h). Airport bus ¥20, taxi ¥80-120.

By HSR: Guilin North Railway Station (桂林北站). 3 hours from Guangzhou (¥180), 6 hours from Shanghai (¥430), 9 hours from Beijing (¥560). Direct HSR from Hong Kong West Kowloon: 3h 30m (¥390). Guilin is a standard stop on the broader 2-week China classic route.

By bus: Long-distance buses from Guangzhou (6 hours, ¥180), Nanning (4 hours, ¥130). HSR is faster.

Inside the area: Didi works in Guilin and Yangshuo. Local buses are cheap (¥1-2) but Chinese-only. Bikes and e-bikes are the main transport in Yangshuo. Renting an e-bike is ¥50-80/day.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Booking the cruise the day of in peak season. The 4-hour cruise sells out 3-7 days ahead in April-May and October. Pre-book via Trip.com or your hotel.
  • Going in June-July (flood season). The Li River turns muddy brown and the cruise is sometimes cancelled. The karst views are also less dramatic without the reflections. April-May or September-October is better.
  • Taking the bamboo raft to Xingping AND the 4-hour cruise. They cover the same route. Pick one.
  • Skipping Reed Flute Cave. Many visitors skip it because “it’s just a cave.” Reed Flute Cave is consistently rated one of the most beautiful limestone caves in Asia. Allow 1.5 hours.
  • Trusting Google Maps. Use Amap (高德地图) or Apple Maps. Inside Yangshuo, English is widely understood. In rural Longji, the village names in English and Chinese are sometimes different — confirm with your hotel before you take the bus.
  • Renting a scooter without experience. Yangshuo’s back roads are busy with trucks. A bike or e-bike is safer for non-experienced riders.

Step by step

  1. Fly into Guilin Liangjiang International Airport (KWL)

Direct flights from Beijing (2h 30m), Shanghai (2h 30m), Guangzhou (1h 10m), Shenzhen (1h 20m), Hong Kong (1h 30m), and 30+ other cities. The airport is 28 km from Guilin city center. Airport bus to downtown: ¥20, 40 min. Taxi: ¥80-120. HSR also works well: Guilin North Railway Station is 6 hours from Shanghai (¥430), 3 hours from Guangzhou (¥180).

  2. Stay 1-2 nights in Guilin city, 2-3 nights in Yangshuo

Guilin city is for the river cruise start, Reed Flute Cave, and Elephant Trunk Hill. Stay near Zhengyang Pedestrian Street (the central downtown) or near the Li River. Yangshuo is for the cruise end, cycling, cooking classes, and West Street. Stay near West Street or on the Yulong River. Hotels in both range from ¥200-1,500/night.

  3. Day 1 — Guilin city (Reed Flute Cave + Elephant Trunk Hill)

Reed Flute Cave (芦笛岩) is 5 km from downtown, 30 min by bus. ¥90 ticket. 1 km of lit walkways through a limestone cave with stalactites and stalagmites. Allow 1.5 hours. Then Elephant Trunk Hill (象鼻山) at the Li River bend — ¥55 ticket, 1.5 hours. The 100m-tall limestone hill with a moon-shaped arch is the symbol of Guilin. Sunset from the nearby Liberation Bridge is free.

  4. Day 2 — Li River cruise (Guilin to Yangshuo)

Take a 4-hour cruise from Zhujiang Wharf (漓江码头) at 9:00 AM. Boats leave daily, year-round. The 83-km journey passes the famous sections: Yellow Cloth Shoal (the ¥20 banknote view), Nine-Horse Fresco Hill, Xingping Ancient Town, and the 20-RMB view. The 4-star boat (¥215) is comfortable; the 5-star boat (¥450) has a glass roof and meals. Book 3-7 days in advance via Trip.com or the official Zhujiang Wharf ticket office.

  5. Day 3 — Yangshuo (cycling + West Street)

Rent a bike from any hotel in Yangshuo (¥20-40/day). Ride the 20-km Yangshuo-Moon Hill-Yulong River loop, 3-4 hours. Detour to the Yulong River bamboo raft (¥150-200 for 2 people, 1.5 hours, poled by a local). End the day at West Street (西街) — the 1,400-year-old pedestrian street with bars, restaurants, and craft shops. Dinner at the Beer Fish (啤酒鱼) restaurants along the Yulong River.

  6. Day 4-5 — Longji Rice Terraces (1-2 days)

Take the Longji bus from Guilin North Bus Station (¥50, 2.5 hours) to the Ping An village entrance. Stay overnight in a Yao or Zhuang wooden guesthouse (¥150-300/night, includes dinner and breakfast). Hike the 7-km Seven Stars with Moon route through the terraces. Alternative: Dazhai village, less crowded, more authentic. Cable car available in both villages (¥60-80).

  7. Buy Li River cruise tickets in advance

The 4-hour Li River cruise sells out 3-7 days in advance in peak season. Book via Trip.com (English, foreign cards), via the official Zhujiang Wharf WeChat mini-program (Chinese only), or at the wharf 1 day ahead. The bamboo raft from Yangshuo to Xingping (90 min) can be booked same-day on the wharf.

  8. Download offline maps and translation

Google Maps is blocked in China. Use Amap (高德地图) for navigation, or Apple Maps. Inside Yangshuo, English is more common than in rural Longji. Save these Chinese names: 漓江 (Lí Jiāng, Li River), 阳朔 (Yángshuò, Yangshuo), 龙脊梯田 (Lóngjǐ Tītián, Longji Rice Terraces), 兴坪 (Xīngpíng, Xingping), 象鼻山 (Xiàngbí Shān, Elephant Trunk Hill).

FAQ

  • 3 days covers the essentials: 1 day Guilin city (Reed Flute Cave + Elephant Trunk Hill), 1 day Li River cruise to Yangshuo, 1 day cycling and West Street in Yangshuo. 5 days lets you add 2 days for the Longji Rice Terraces and a slow Yangshuo day for rock climbing or a cooking class. 2 days is rushed but doable if you skip Longji.
  • Yes, the 83-km cruise is the iconic way to see the karst landscape. The 4-hour boat ride from Zhujiang Wharf in Guilin to Yangshuo Wharf passes the most-photographed sections (Xingping, Nine-Horse Fresco Hill, Yellow Cloth Shoal). 4-star boats ¥215, 5-star ¥450. An alternative is the 90-min bamboo raft ride from Yangshuo to Xingping (¥150) for a shorter version.
  • April-May for warm weather, low water levels (the reflections are sharpest), and rice transplanting. September-October for autumn colors and harvest at Longji. Avoid June-July — flood season makes the Li River muddy and the cruises are sometimes cancelled. Avoid Chinese National Day (Oct 1-7) and the May Day holiday — Yangshuo is packed.
  • It depends on your passport. As of 2026, citizens of 55+ countries (US, UK, Australia, Canada, most EU, Japan, Korea) can enter China visa-free for 10 days via a port city, and Guilin is included. The 240-hour transit visa also covers Guilin if you are transiting through. Check the China 240-Hour Visa-Free Transit Checker for your specific passport. • Yes, the most popular ride is the 20-km loop from Yangshuo town to the Moon Hill and back, mostly on flat back roads through rice paddies and villages. Bike rental is ¥20-40/day from any hotel in Yangshuo. The ride takes 3-4 hours including photo stops. The full Li River road is also drivable but the cruise does the heavy lifting.
  • Yes, especially for photographers. The Longji (Dragon's Backbone) Rice Terraces are 100 km north of Guilin, 2 hours by bus. The terraces cascade from 300m to 1,100m, with Zhuang and Yao ethnic minority villages. Allow 1 full day. The best sections are Ping An (most-photographed, more developed) and Dazhai (more authentic, fewer tourists).
  • Yes for all ages. The Li River cruise is scenic and slow-paced. The Reed Flute Cave is 1 km of paved walkways with colorful lights. Yangshuo has rock climbing for kids 6+, and the West Street is walkable. The Longji hike has steep sections but the cable car covers the worst. The main concern is the heat and humidity April-October — bring hats, sunscreen, and 3-4L of water daily.
