Yangshuo + Zhangjiajie: 4-Day Group Add-On
2-night Yangshuo (Li River, karst peaks, cycling) + 2-night Zhangjiajie (Avatar Mountains, glass bridge) add-on to the 7-day Beijing-Xi'an-Shanghai route. Group logistics, costs, and how to skip the tour buses.
The standard 7-day China itinerary (Beijing → Xi’an → Shanghai) covers the three most iconic cities. It does not cover the two most photogenic landscapes in the country. This article is the add-on: a 4-day Yangshuo + Zhangjiajie extension for groups of 4–6 who have already done the classic route and want the natural scenery that made James Cameron film Avatar.
The route: fly or train from Shanghai to Guilin, 2 nights in Yangshuo, train to Zhangjiajie, 2 nights in Wulingyuan, fly to Shanghai for departure (or onward to Hong Kong / Chengdu). It works equally well as a 4-day add-on to the 7-day classic route, or as a standalone 4-day trip for a group flying into Guilin Liangjiang airport (GUL).
A 5-person group, hostels + standard transport + a private Zhangjiajie tour, plans ¥3,500–5,000 per person ($490–700) for 4 days excluding international flights. Mid-range hotels and a private Yangshuo guide push the upper end to ¥5,000–7,000 ($700–980). This is the cheapest 4 days of “bucket list China” you can do as a group.
When to go
April–May or September–November are the right answer. Karst peaks at 24–28°C in late April, 28–32°C in May, 20–26°C in October. Avoid Chinese New Year, the first week of October, the entire month of August (typhoon + heat in Yangshuo, and Zhangjiajie crowds peak), and the late-July to early-August storm window. The 2 best windows: late April (after Qingming) and mid-to-late October (after Golden Week).
Yangshuo is at 25°C average year-round (the karst basin traps heat). The rainy season (May–June) has daily afternoon storms; pack a light rain jacket. Zhangjiajie in the Wulingyuan mountains is 5–7°C cooler than Yangshuo, with cold nights in October and November — bring a fleece.
Yangshuo (Guangxi) — 2 nights
Day 1: Arrive Guilin, transfer to Yangshuo, Li River cruise
If you flew in: Guilin Liangjiang International Airport (KWL) to Yangshuo is 1.5 hours by DiDi or airport shuttle bus (¥50 / $7 per person on the official line, runs every 30 min from the airport to Yangshuo’s West Street until 8 PM). If you came by HSR: Guilin North Station to Yangshuo is 25 min by HSR (¥30 / $4.20 second-class, runs every 15–20 min) or 1.5 hours by bus (¥35 / $5).
Drop bags at the hotel (most groups stay on or near West Street — the central pedestrian street with the hostels, restaurants, and bars). A reliable 4-person option is Yangshuo Mountain Retreat (阳朔山畔度假酒店, ¥600–900 / $84–126 per night for a double, on the Yulong River 4 km from West Street, free shuttle, Michelin-recommended restaurant). A 5-bed group dorm is Once Youth Hostel Yangshuo (¥80 / $11 per bed, central West Street location, bar downstairs).
Late morning: pick up the Li River cruise (漓江, ¥215–450 / $30–63 per person, 4 hours Guilin to Yangshuo) from Zhujiao Pier (竹江码头). The cruise passes the Nine Horse Fresco Hill, the Yellow Cloth Shoal (the ¥20 banknote scene), and Xingping ancient town. For groups, the 3-star boat (¥215) is fine — the 4-star (¥450) has a sit-down lunch and a more comfortable top deck, but the 3-star is also open-deck and the food is the same quality. Book through Trip.com 3–5 days ahead.
Arrive in Yangshuo at 2 PM. Walk the 10 min from the cruise dock to West Street. Lunch at Demi Restaurant (modern Italian, ¥150 / $21 per person with pasta) or Yangshuo Dumpling King (¥50 / $7 per person for 12 dumplings).
Afternoon: bicycle rental (¥30 / $4 per bike per day from any of the West Street shops, basic mountain bikes — or upgrade to electric bikes for ¥80 / $11). Ride the Yulong River rice paddy loop — 8 km flat, 1.5–2 hours at a slow pace with photo stops. The route is marked; the best stop is at the Xinglong bamboo-raft crossing where 2-person pole-rafts float across the shallow river. A 30-minute raft ride is ¥120 / $17 per raft (2 people, not 5 — for 5 people, take 3 rafts).
Evening: Impression Sanjie Liu (印象·刘三姐) outdoor light show directed by Zhang Yimou — 600 performers on the Li River, 70 minutes, ¥238 / $33 per person. Standard seating is fine; VIP (¥350 / $49) is unobstructed but not necessary for a 5-person group. The show runs nightly in good weather, book via Klook.
Dinner at Cloud 9 (Yunnan/Guangxi fusion, ¥300 / $42 for two) or Yangshuo Brewery (craft beer + Western food, ¥200 / $28 per person).
Day 2: Xianggong Hill sunrise + Xingping ancient town
Sunrise at Xianggong Hill (相公山, ¥60 / $8.50 entry, 20-min climb) — the classic karst panorama shot. The view is best at 5:45–6:30 AM in late April or mid-October. The hill has a small viewing platform at the top with a tea stall; bring a tripod if you have one.
After sunrise, walk through Xingping ancient town (¥20 entry) — a 1,700-year-old stone-street village on the Li River. The river boat dock is the one on the ¥20 banknote. Lunch at one of the canal-side restaurants (zharou ¥6, zongzi ¥6, river shrimp ¥40).
Afternoon: Yulong River inner bamboo-raft (more intimate than the Xinglong crossing) — a 4-person raft, 1 hour, ¥200 / $28 per raft. The inner Yulong is narrower and more photogenic than the Xinglong crossing.
Evening: rock climbing at the Moon Hill crag — Yangshuo is one of the world’s top 5 rock-climbing destinations and a guided half-day climb for 5 people runs ¥1,500–2,000 ($210–280) for the group, bookable at any West Street shop. Or, for the more laid-back option, a karst-paddy photo walk with a local photographer-guide (¥500 / $70 for 2 hours, 5 people).
Dinner at Pure Lotus (素食餐厅, vegetarian, ¥100 / $14 per person) or at the Yangshuo Mountain Retreat restaurant if you stayed there.
Zhangjiajie (Hunan) — 2 nights
Day 3: HSR/flight to Zhangjiajie, Tianmen Mountain
Getting from Yangshuo to Zhangjiajie:
- Option A (recommended for groups): Fly Guilin Liangjiang → Zhangjiajie Hehua (DYG), 1h 30m direct, ¥600–1,000 / $84–140. Spring Airlines 9C and China Southern CZ have daily flights. Book 5+ days ahead.
- Option B: HSR Guilin North → Changsha South (2h 30m, ¥230 / $32) → HSR Changsha South → Zhangjiajie West (2h 40m, ¥140 / $20). Total 5h 30m with 1 transfer. The scenery on the Changsha → Zhangjiajie leg is the right kind of dramatic — the train climbs into the Wulingyuan mountains for the last hour.
If flying, land at Zhangjiajie Hehua (DYG), DiDi to Wulingyuan town (1 hour, ¥200 / $28). If HSR, arrive at Zhangjiajie West Station, DiDi to Wulingyuan (45 min, ¥150 / $21). Drop bags at the hotel.
The most reliable 4-person option in Wulingyuan town is Pullman Zhangjiajie (¥700–1,000 / $98–140 per night for a double, the only 5-star international chain in the area, 5 min from the Wulingyuan National Park south gate). A 6-bed group dorm is Zhangjiajie International Youth Hostel (¥60 / $8.50 per bed, dorm-style, 2 km from the south gate).
Afternoon: Tianmen Mountain (天门山, ¥261 / $36.50 combined ticket including cable car + glass skywalk + escalator). The Tianmen Mountain Cable Car (世界最长高山客运索道) is the longest passenger cable car in the world — 7,455m, 28 min from the city base to the mountain top. The glass skywalk (西线玻璃栈道) is 60m long, 1,430m above sea level.
The escalator to Tianmen Cave (天门洞, “Heaven’s Gate”) — the natural arch carved into the cliff face — is the highlight. The original is 999 steps, which is too many for a group that just flew. The 12-stage escalator system (built 2005, free with the ticket) gets you to the bottom of the cave in 30 minutes. The top of the cave has the 999-step option back up (for the 1 person in your group who wants the leg burn).
Time on Tianmen: 4–5 hours. Return to the hotel by 6 PM.
Dinner at Tianmen Mountain Restaurant (the only decent option near the cable car) or back in Wulingyuan town at Hunan Flavor (湘味, ¥100 / $14 per person, spicy).
Day 4: Wulingyuan National Park (Avatar Mountains) + departure
Full day to Wulingyuan National Park (武陵源, ¥225 / $31.50 for a 4-day pass, includes all 4 sub-parks: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Suoxi Valley, Tianzi Mountain, Yangjiajie). The 4-day pass is the right product — most groups stay 2 nights but the pass gives you flexibility for weather.
The route that hits the Avatar mountain photo without the crowds:
- 7:30 AM: enter the south gate, take the Bailong Elevator (百龙天梯, ¥65 / $9, the world’s tallest outdoor elevator, 326m in 2 min) to the top of the cliff
- 8:00 AM: walk the Hallelujah Mountain viewing platform — the actual movie-inspiration site for Avatar’s floating mountains
- 9:00 AM: walk the Tianzi Mountain ridge trail (天子山) — 3 km flat, 90 min, the most dramatic karst-needle landscape in the park
- 11:00 AM: descend by Tianzi Mountain cable car (¥72 / $10, 20 min, panoramic) to the Suoxi Valley base
- 11:30 AM: walk the Golden Whip Stream (金鞭溪, 5.7 km flat, 2.5 hours) — the most relaxing trail in the park, follows a stream under a forest canopy, the only “flat easy walk” in the entire park. This is the trail the real mountain scenery is best appreciated from, but most tour groups skip it.
- 2:00 PM: lunch at the Suoxi Valley exit (simple Chinese restaurants, ¥50 / $7 per person)
- 3:00 PM: return to Wulingyuan town, freshen up at the hotel
- 5:00 PM: DiDi to Zhangjiajie Hehua airport (1 hour) for a flight to Shanghai (2h 30m, ¥600–900 / $84–126, 1 daily direct on Spring Airlines 9C) or to Changsha (1 hour, ¥300–500 / $42–70) for onward HSR
If your group has 1 more day, swap Day 4 for a Tianmen Mountain sunrise (cable car up at 5 AM) before the crowds, then spend the day on the Wulingyuan trails.
Where to stay
| City | Budget (hostel) | Mid (4-star) | Luxury (5-star) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yangshuo | Once Youth Hostel (¥80/bed, central West Street) | Yangshuo Mountain Retreat (¥600–900/night, Yulong River) | Banyan Tree Yangshuo (¥1,500–2,500/night, Li River) |
| Zhangjiajie/Wulingyuan | Zhangjiajie International Youth Hostel (¥60/bed, near south gate) | Pullman Zhangjiajie (¥700–1,000/night) | Zhangjiajie Sangem World Resort (¥1,500–2,500/night, 30 min from south gate) |
For a 5-person group: 2 adjoining rooms at the Mountain Retreat (¥1,800/night total) + 2 adjoining rooms at Pullman (¥1,800/night total) = ¥3,600 ($504) for 2 nights total, or ¥720 ($100) per person for 2 nights. This is the realistic mid-tier 5-person math.
Group logistics: how to avoid the tour bus
The single biggest difference between a fun 4 days and a torturous 4 days is avoiding the day-tour buses. The day tours from Yangshuo (¥300/p) and from Zhangjiajie (¥500/p) herd 30–40 people onto a bus, hit the main sites in 6 hours, and skip the trails. For 5 people:
- Yangshuo: hire a local driver and skip the day tour. ¥600–800 ($84–112) for a 6-seat minivan for a half day, or ¥1,200 ($168) for a full day. The driver doubles as a guide if you ask. They know the back roads the tour buses skip.
- Zhangjiajie: hire a private guide for Wulingyuan. ¥1,000–1,500 ($140–210) for a group of 5 for a full day. The guides know the timing — they can get you to the Bailong Elevator at 7:30 AM (10 min after opening, before the buses arrive) and the Hallelujah Mountain viewpoint before 8:30 AM. The difference between 8:30 AM and 11 AM at that viewpoint is the difference between 5 people and 200. Worth every yuan.
For HSR (Yangshuo → Guilin North → Changsha → Zhangjiajie), book 5 seats together on Trip.com. The HSR group booking tool reserves adjacent seats and accepts a single payment for the whole group.

What to bring
- Comfortable shoes with grip. Wulingyuan has 3,000+ stone steps in the Avatar Mountain area. Trail runners or hiking shoes, not sneakers.
- Rain jacket (May–June, late August). Afternoon storms are 30-min sudden downpours, not all-day rain.
- Power bank (the cruise, Tianmen, and Wulingyuan are 4–6 hour outings with no charging).
- Sun hat + sunscreen + refillable water bottle (free water fountains in Wulingyuan, water bottle refills in Yangshuo are less common).
- Layers (October–November, the Wulingyuan mountains are 5–7°C cooler than Yangshuo).
- VPN (Google Maps works in China only with VPN; Amap (高德地图) and Baidu Maps work without). For a 4-day trip with 2 long-distance moves, VPN is worth the install.
Visa-free entry
French, German, UK, Australian, Canadian, and US passport holders enter China visa-free for 30 days in 2026 (most under the mutual visa exemption list, US under the 30-day unilateral list). Brazilian, Argentine, Chilean, and most LATAM passport holders also qualify. See our 30-day visa-free guide and the 240-hour visa-free guide.

Step by step
-
Pick the right window: late April or mid-October
Karst peaks at 24-28°C in late April, 20-26°C in October. Avoid Chinese New Year, the first week of October, all of August (typhoon + heat in Yangshuo, peak Zhangjiajie crowds), and the late-July to early-August storm window. Yangshuo is at 25°C year-round (the karst basin traps heat) with daily afternoon storms in May-June. Zhangjiajie's Wulingyuan mountains are 5-7°C cooler — bring a fleece in October-November.
-
Fly into Guilin, cruise the Li River to Yangshuo (2 nights)
Fly to Guilin Liangjiang (KWL), DiDi or shuttle bus to Yangshuo (1.5 hours, ¥50). Pick up the Li River cruise (¥215-450/p, 4 hours Guilin to Yangshuo) from Zhujiao Pier. Book through Trip.com 3-5 days ahead. Stay on or near West Street — Yangshuo Mountain Retreat (¥600-900/night for a double, Yulong River) for mid-range or Once Youth Hostel (¥80/bed) for budget. For 5 people, 2 adjoining rooms at Mountain Retreat = ¥1,800/night total.
-
Sunrise at Xianggong Hill + Yulong River bamboo raft
Day 2: 5:45-6:30 AM sunrise at Xianggong Hill (¥60 entry, 20-min climb) — the classic karst panorama. After sunrise, walk through Xingping ancient town (¥20 entry) and have lunch at a canal-side restaurant (¥50-80/p). Afternoon: Yulong River inner bamboo-raft (¥200/raft, 1 hour, 4 people) — narrower and more photogenic than the Xinglong crossing. Evening: rock climbing at Moon Hill (¥1,500-2,000 for a guided half-day for 5) or a karst-paddy photo walk with a local guide.
-
Fly to Zhangjiajie, visit Tianmen Mountain (1 night)
Day 3: Fly Guilin Liangjiang → Zhangjiajie Hehua (DYG), 1h 30m direct, ¥600-1,000. Spring Airlines 9C and China Southern CZ have daily flights — book 5+ days ahead. Alternative: HSR via Changsha (5h 30m with 1 transfer). DiDi to Wulingyuan town (1 hour, ¥200). Stay at Pullman Zhangjiajie (¥700-1,000/night, the only 5-star international chain near the park) or Zhangjiajie International Youth Hostel (¥60/bed). Afternoon: Tianmen Mountain (¥261 combined ticket) — the world's longest passenger cable car (7,455m, 28 min) and the 12-stage escalator to Tianmen Cave.
-
Full day in Wulingyuan, hit Hallelujah Mountain at 7:30 AM
Day 4: Wulingyuan National Park ¥225 for a 4-day pass (all 4 sub-parks). The route: 7:30 AM enter south gate, take Bailong Elevator (¥65, world's tallest outdoor elevator, 326m in 2 min), 8:00 AM Hallelujah Mountain viewpoint (the actual movie-inspiration site for Avatar), 9:00 AM Tianzi Mountain ridge trail (3 km flat, 90 min), 11:00 AM descend via Tianzi cable car (¥72), 11:30 AM Golden Whip Stream (5.7 km flat, 2.5 hours, the most relaxing trail in the park), 2:00 PM lunch, 3:00 PM return to Wulingyuan town. Fly out from DYG to Shanghai (2h 30m) or Changsha (1 hour) for onward HSR.
FAQ
-
What is the best time to visit Yangshuo and Zhangjiajie?
Late April (after Qingming) or mid-to-late October (after Golden Week) are the two best windows. Karst peaks hit 24-28°C in late April, 20-26°C in October. Avoid Chinese New Year, the first week of October, all of August (typhoon + heat in Yangshuo, peak Zhangjiajie crowds), and the late-July to early-August storm window. Yangshuo is at 25°C year-round (the karst basin traps heat) with daily afternoon storms in May-June; Zhangjiajie's Wulingyuan mountains are 5-7°C cooler, with cold nights in October-November — bring a fleece. -
How much does a 4-day Yangshuo + Zhangjiajie trip cost for 5 people?
Hostels + standard transport + a private Zhangjiajie guide: ¥3,500-5,000 per person ($490-700) for 4 days excluding international flights. Mid-range hotels and a private Yangshuo guide push the upper end to ¥5,000-7,000 ($700-980) per person. The detailed mid-tier 5-person budget per the table in this article totals ¥27,955 ($782 per person): hotels ¥1,440, Li River cruise ¥450, shows/tickets ¥435, internal flight ¥1,450, food ¥800, plus a private guide ¥280. This is the cheapest 4 days of 'bucket list China' you can do as a group. -
Do I need to join a tour bus, or can I do it independently?
Skip the tour buses. Day tours from Yangshuo (¥300/p) and Zhangjiajie (¥500/p) herd 30-40 people onto a bus, hit the main sites in 6 hours, and skip the trails. For a 5-person group, hire a local driver in Yangshuo (¥600-800 for a half-day 6-seat minivan, ¥1,200 for a full day — the driver doubles as a guide) and a private Zhangjiajie guide (¥1,000-1,500 for 5 people for a full day). The Zhangjiajie guide timing is the key — they get you to the Bailong Elevator at 7:30 AM and the Hallelujah Mountain viewpoint before 8:30 AM, when the buses haven't arrived yet. The difference between 8:30 AM and 11 AM is 5 people vs 200. -
Should I visit Yangshuo first or Zhangjiajie first?
The standard route is Yangshuo first then Zhangjiajie (Guilin → Yangshuo → fly to Zhangjiajie → fly out). The two main reasons: (1) Yangshuo is the gentler, lower-altitude intro — flat bike rides and a calm river cruise acclimatize you to Chinese domestic travel; (2) the internal flight Guilin Liangjiang (KWL) → Zhangjiajie Hehua (DYG) is only 1h 30m direct, while the alternative HSR route adds 5h 30m and a transfer in Changsha. The reverse (Zhangjiajie first) works too, but it means more total transit time. -
Can I do this trip with kids?
Yes, with adjustments. The 999 steps at Tianmen Cave are too many for most kids under 8 — take the 12-stage escalator system (free with the ticket). The Yulong River bamboo raft (2 people per raft, ¥120) is great for kids over 5. The Wulingyuan Golden Whip Stream trail (5.7 km flat, 2.5 hours) is family-friendly. Skip rock climbing at Moon Hill for kids under 10. Pack layers — the Wulingyuan mountains are 5-7°C cooler than Yangshuo in October-November. The best kid-friendly shortcut: add 1 extra day to do the Tianmen Mountain sunrise before the crowds, then spend the day on the Wulingyuan flat trails.
