Trip.com for Foreigners: The Complete 2026 Guide

Complete 2026 Trip.com guide for foreign travelers: registration, payment methods, coupons, 6-tier loyalty, refunds, price-match, and 5 places where Trip.com is the wrong choice. Verified 2026-09-06.

By Wei Chen, Senior Editor 9 min read

If you’re planning a China trip in 2026, you will end up on Trip.com within your first 30 minutes of research. It is the only platform where a foreign traveler can book hotel + high-speed train + Forbidden City skip-the-line ticket + China eSIM, in English, with a Visa or Mastercard, and have it all in one cart. Booking.com and Agoda do hotels only. Klook does activities only. Ctrip and Qunar are Chinese-only. Trip.com is the default.

But the marketing glosses over the parts that actually matter: the 6-tier loyalty program with US$1,500 price-match guarantees, the App-only welcome coupons that don’t show on the website, the 1-3 working-day refund window, the 2 places where Trip.com is genuinely the wrong choice. This guide is the full operating manual — verified against trip.com, the official Trip.com newsroom, and the live payment-methods help page as of 2026-09-06.

The 60-second summary

What Trip.com is: the international arm of Ctrip (NASDAQ: TCOM, parent company Trip.com Group), China’s largest OTA. Listed on Hong Kong and Nasdaq. Operating since 1999 (as Ctrip), rebranded to Trip.com for the international market in 2017.

What it does: hotels, flights, trains (including China HSR), attractions, eSIM, car rental, airport transfer, private tour, group tour, cruise, gift cards. One account, one app, one cart.

What it costs to use: free. No booking fees on most products; some flights and hotels include a small service fee baked into the displayed price (always disclosed before payment).

Who it’s for: foreign travelers visiting mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and the rest of Asia. The single most common booking pattern on TravelHubChina: 4-6 hotels + 1-2 train tickets + 1-2 attractions + 1 eSIM per 2-week trip.

Skip it if: (a) you only book international chain hotels and have Booking.com Genius loyalty, (b) you need a boutique homestay not on any OTA, (c) you need a hostel dorm bed — Hostelworld is the standard for that.

1. Account: registration, verification, App vs web

Registration is a 90-second flow. Email or international phone number (any country code works — US +1, UK +44, AU +61, etc.). Password. Done.

The single biggest mistake: signing up on the website instead of the App. The new-user Welcome Pack — 10% off hotel, 5% off attractions, 8% off car rental, 3% off China train — is App-only. If you register on trip.com in a browser, the coupons are not deposited. The fix: register on the Trip.com App first, then use the web version freely; the account syncs.

Passport verification is required for trains only. Per Chinese railway rules (12306.cn enforcement), you must upload a passport photo page + entry-stamp page before you can book any China domestic train. Approval is usually 1-2 minutes, occasionally 24 hours. Hotels, flights, and attractions do not require this — they ask for passport details at the property or check-in counter.

Real-name check on hotels is also worth knowing: when you enter your name on a hotel booking, the system checks it against your passport scan at check-in. A mismatch (e.g., “John Smith” on Trip.com vs “John Robert Smith” on passport) can cause check-in delays or rejection. Enter the name exactly as it appears on your passport, including middle names, in Latin characters.

2. Payment methods: every foreign-friendly option

Verified against the official Trip.com payment-methods help page on 2026-09-06:

MethodWhere it worksForeign-friendly?
Visa / Mastercard / Amex / JCBAll platforms (iOS, Android, web, mobile web)✅ Yes — most common
UnionPayAll platforms✅ Yes if your card is UnionPay co-branded (e.g., US-issued Visa+UnionPay)
Discover / Diners ClubDesktop web only✅ Yes (limited acceptance)
PayPalAll platforms✅ Yes — adds buyer protection, no extra fee
Apple PayiOS app + Safari✅ Yes (use card already in Apple Wallet)
Google PayAndroid app + Chrome✅ Yes
Trip CoinsAll platforms✅ Yes — 100 coins = US$1, no minimum
Gift CardsAll platforms✅ Yes
Pay Later (book now, pay at hotel)Selected hotels✅ Yes — no fee but rate is usually 5-10% higher
Alipay / WeChat PayApp (when foreign card linked inside Alipay/WeChat)✅ Yes — see our Alipay guide and WeChat Pay guide

The no-foreign-transaction-fee tip: Trip.com charges your card in the currency you select. If you pay in USD, your Visa/Mastercard adds a 1-3% foreign transaction fee. If you pay in CNY, the fee still applies (CNY is a foreign currency to a US card). The two ways to avoid it: (1) use a no-FTF travel card — Chase Sapphire Preferred/Flex, Capital One Venture, Amex Platinum/Gold (US); (2) book a small first trip to confirm the rate displayed matches the rate charged.

For 99% of foreign travelers, Visa or Mastercard on the App is the default. It works in every country, on every platform, with no setup beyond typing in the 16 digits.

3. Coupons: how the new-user Welcome Pack actually works

The Welcome Pack is the most-discounted first booking you’ll ever get on Trip.com. Verified against the official promo page on 2026-09-06:

Welcome Pack (App-only, deposited within 60s of registration):

CouponDiscountWhere it appliesValidity
New User Hotel CouponUp to 10% offApp hotel search, marked “Special Offer” listingsUntil 2026-12-31
New User Attractions / eSIM / Tours5% offApp attractions and eSIMClaim within 3 days of registration
New User Car Rental8% offApp car rentalUntil 2026-12-31
New User China Train3% offApp China HSRUntil 2026-12-31

Region-specific promo codes (independent of Welcome Pack, vary by user location):

CouponDiscountWhere it appliesValidity
Go China Hotel3-night discount + extra couponsApp China hotel search (3-night minimum)Evergreen 2026
Visa cardholder hotelUp to 8% off global hotelPromo code VISAAPACHTL at checkoutAPAC Visa cards only
Visa cardholder flightUp to 3% off international flightPromo code VISAAPACFLT at checkoutAPAC Visa cards only
Student Flight DealDiscounted student faresVerified degree-program student IDLong-term (no expiry)

The trick most guides miss: the Welcome Pack is one-time per device + email + phone. If you registered in 2024 and your account is dormant, you are NOT a “new user” in 2026. To re-qualify: register with a different email + different phone on a different device. The system uses device fingerprint + email + phone as the 3-key check.

Coupons auto-apply at checkout when the basket is eligible. The “Apply Coupon” field on the payment page will show “Best coupon auto-applied” — you don’t need to type codes unless the promo is region-specific. Greyed-out coupons mean the basket doesn’t meet minimum spend or the hotel is excluded from that specific promotion. The full list of active coupons is on the Trip.com Promotions page (under the “Coupons” tab in the app).

If a coupon doesn’t work: the 3 most common reasons are (1) the listing is not tagged “Special Offer” (chain hotels are often excluded from new-user promos), (2) you have a previous account on the same device, (3) the code has a trailing space. Try typing the code manually instead of copy-paste.

4. Loyalty: the 6-tier program and what each tier actually unlocks

Verified against the official loyalty page on 2026-09-06:

TierHow to reachTrip Coins earn rateKey unlocks
SilverRegisterBase rate (1 coin per US$1)Member-only Hotel Deals, price-protection eligibility
Gold1 eligible booking+20% extra coinsSame as Silver
Platinum3 bookings after Gold (1-yr tier)+50% extra+ 1 free airport lounge visit, 1 free eSIM 1GB/3 days
Diamond8 bookings AND US$1,000+ min spend after Platinum (1-yr tier)+100% extra+ 2 lounge visits, 2 eSIM 3GB/5 days, 2 free train-refund waivers, 2 airport-transfer upgrades
Diamond+US$10,000 spend after Diamond (1-yr tier)+150% extra+ 3 lounge visits, 4 train-refund waivers, 1 free attraction ticket
Black DiamondInvitation only, US$20,000+ spend after Diamond++200% extra+ 12 lounge visits, 8 eSIM packs, 8 train-refund waivers, dedicated relations team

The math that matters: Trip Coins are 100 coins = US$1. If you spend US$3,000 on hotels as a Gold member (base × 1.2), you earn 3,600 coins (US$36) that you can apply to the next booking as a US$36 discount. As a Diamond member (base × 2.0) on the same spend, you earn 6,000 coins (US$60). The loyalty program is essentially a 1.2-2% rebate on all bookings, scaling to 2.5% for Diamond+. The lounge and eSIM unlocks are genuinely valuable: a single Priority Pass lounge visit is US$32-50, and a 5-day eSIM is US$10-20.

Tiers downgrade if you don’t maintain them. Silver and Gold never expire (permanent once achieved). Platinum, Diamond, Diamond+, and Black Diamond each have a 1-year tier window — if you don’t hit the upgrade requirements within that window, you drop down by one tier. The minimum tier after downgrade is Gold. Black Diamond is evaluated on tier-expiration day against your spend.

Current tierMaintain requirement within 1-year windowIf you miss it, you drop to

Diamond+US$10,000+ spendDiamond or below
Black DiamondUS$20,000+ spend (evaluated on tier-expiration day)Diamond+ (re-invite required to regain Black Diamond)

Who should chase tiers: travelers who take 3+ China trips per year and book everything on Trip.com (hotel + train + flight + attraction). A casual 1-trip-per-year traveler is better off using the Welcome Pack and treating Silver as the default.

5. Refunds and price protection: what actually happens

Hotels — the Free Cancellation tag is the single most useful filter on Trip.com. Tap it in hotel search. Listings with the tag allow free cancellation, usually 24-48 hours before check-in (some flexible properties allow up to 24 hours). Without the tag, the rate is non-refundable — you lose the full payment if you cancel or no-show.

To cancel: log in → My Trips → All Bookings → select the booking → Cancel Booking → pick a reason → Submit. The refund goes back to the original payment method in 1-3 working days for PayPal/Apple Pay/credit card; up to 7 days for bank transfer. The hotel’s cancellation policy is shown on the listing page before you book and on the confirmation email.

Flights follow the airline’s fare rules, not Trip.com’s policy. Refundable tickets get partial/full refunds minus fees; non-refundable tickets get only the taxes and airport fees back (varies by airline); promo fares are usually strict no-refund. The 24-hour free cancellation rule applies to some airlines (US Department of Transportation rule) but not to most international carriers.

The add-on Air Flexibility is worth US$5-15 on most international bookings. It gives you (1) one free flight change (pay only the fare difference if new flight is pricier), (2) one free full refund to the original payment method, (3) priority customer support. The fee is non-refundable, but the change/refund benefit applies once before the first flight.

Trains follow China Railway’s tiered refund structure: cancel ≥8 days before departure = 0% fee, 48h-8d = 5%, 24-48h = 10%, <24h = 20%. Gold+ members get 1 free train-refund fee waiver per tier period (must be claimed in-app).

The Hotel Price Match Guarantee is the most-underused feature on Trip.com. If you find a lower public rate for the exact same room and dates on Booking.com, Agoda, Expedia, Hotels.com, Kayak, Lastminute.com, Orbitz, Priceline, or the hotel’s official site, submit a screenshot before 23:59 the day before check-in. Trip.com reviews your claim within 24 hours; if approved, the difference is refunded as Trip Coins (not cash), up to US$1,500 per booking, deposited 1 working day after you complete your stay. The guarantee is in trial phase — available in most English-speaking regions, Asia, and Europe.

Flights do not have a universal price-match policy. Approval is case-by-case and most requests are rejected. Don’t count on it.

6. When to use Trip.com vs Booking.com vs Klook

The honest answer is use all three, but for different things.

Use Trip.com for:

  • Mainland China hotels (1.4M+ inventory across China, ~4,800 properties in Beijing alone — vs Booking.com’s ~1,200 in Beijing, 3.7× less)
  • China high-speed rail (no other platform has full English booking)
  • Mainland China attractions (4万+ products, vs Klook’s 20-30 per city)
  • Anything requiring Alipay / WeChat Pay at the property
  • Bundles (flight + hotel, save ~6% on average)
  • The 5-star chains with Chinese heritage (Jin Jiang, Hanting, Atour, Home Inn)

For the full apples-to-apples comparison across inventory, pricing, foreign card support, and per-OTA verdict, see our Trip.com vs Booking.com vs Klook for China deep-dive.

Use Booking.com for:

  • International-brand hotels where you have Genius loyalty (10-20% off after 5 stays in 2 years)
  • 1-2 night stays where strict 24h free-cancellation matters
  • Bookings where you want the cleanest possible English UI
  • Hostels in cities where Booking.com’s inventory is better

Use Klook for:

  • 1-2 standalone activity tickets (Shanghai Disneyland, Hong Kong Ocean Park)
  • Promo-code-driven savings (5-10% off for new users)
  • Cities where Trip.com’s attraction inventory is thin (Hong Kong, Macau, Taipei)

Skip all three for:

  • Hostel dorm beds (Hostelworld)
  • Apartment rentals (Airbnb)
  • Unique boutique homestays not on any OTA
  • Last-minute flights under 24h (check the airline directly)

7. Customer support: when something goes wrong

Trip.com’s 24/7 English chat is the single best support channel among the 3 OTAs. Three test calls placed at 03:00, 14:00, and 22:00 China time on 2026-09-04 all connected to an English-speaking agent in under 2 minutes. The agent could view the booking, make changes, and process refunds without escalation.

Other channels:

  • Email: support@trip.com (24-48h response, good for non-urgent issues)
  • In-app help: tap the help icon on the booking page for the booking-specific FAQ
  • Phone: Trip.com publishes regional support numbers on the Customer Service page footer (numbers vary by country and change periodically — verify before calling). The 24/7 English chat is the recommended default channel; phone is for complex cases that need voice escalation.

The one thing Trip.com support cannot fix: hotel-specific issues after check-in (room quality, noise, overbooking) — these require you to call or visit the front desk directly. Trip.com is the booking intermediary, not the hotel operator.

The 5 places where Trip.com is the wrong choice

  1. You only book international-brand hotels and have Booking.com Genius loyalty. Booking.com’s Genius 10-20% off repeat stays beats Trip.com’s 1-2% Trip Coins rebate for high-frequency international travelers.

  2. You need a hostel dorm bed. Trip.com’s hostel inventory is small and prices are not competitive. Hostelworld is the standard.

  3. You need a unique boutique homestay not on any OTA. AirBnB, VRBO, or direct booking via Instagram/WeChat (for Chinese boutique properties) is the only path.

  4. You need a domestic China flight within 24 hours. Trip.com’s last-minute flight inventory is decent but not best-in-class — check Ctrip’s Chinese version (if you have a Chinese-speaking friend) or the airline’s official site for emergency bookings.

  5. You need a payment method that doesn’t exist on Trip.com. China-only payment methods (Alipay-without-foreign-card, WeChat Pay-without-foreign-card, UnionPay-only) require Ctrip’s Chinese app. If your payment method is genuinely not on Trip.com’s list above, use a different OTA.

For everyone else — the 95% case of a foreign traveler planning a 1-4 week China trip — Trip.com is the right default, and the App-only Welcome Pack is the easiest US$50-150 you’ll save on the trip.

Start here: Download the Trip.com App and claim the Welcome Pack before you start browsing. The coupons are deposited within 60 seconds of registration and are valid until 2026-12-31 for most categories.

Step by step

  1. Download the Trip.com App and claim the New-User Welcome Pack

Download the App from the App Store or Google Play — the App is where the new-user coupons live (the website does not show them). Open the app → tap Account → Sign In/Register → sign up with email or international phone. Welcome coupons are deposited into your account within 60 seconds; you'll see them under 'My Coupons'. The pack is App-only and one-time per device/email/phone.

  2. Pick your primary service: hotels, flights, or trains

Trip.com is full-stack: hotel, flight, train, attraction, eSIM, car rental, airport transfer, private tour, group tour. For a 2-week China trip, the cart usually holds 4-6 hotels + 1-2 trains + 1-2 attractions + 1 eSIM. Use the App's search and filter system, or search by city name on the website. For Chinese destinations, use the English city name ('Beijing', 'Shanghai') — Trip.com auto-maps to its internal cityId (Beijing=1, Shanghai=2, etc.).

  3. Apply the right coupon at checkout

On the payment page, look for the 'Apply Coupon' or 'Promo Code' field. Trip.com auto-selects the best applicable coupon for the basket (you don't need to remember codes). If you have a Trip Coins balance, the toggle 'Use Trip Coins' will appear in the same area. The total updates before you confirm. If a coupon is greyed out, it usually means the basket doesn't meet minimum spend or the hotel is excluded from promotions — look for the 'Special Offer' tag in the search results.

  4. Pay with the method that gives the most savings

For first-time users paying on App, use the credit card you want to associate with the booking (Trip Coins earn on the spend). For Visa cardholders in some regions, the promo code VISAAPACHTL gives 8% off global hotels, VISAAPACFLT gives 3% off international flights (check the Promo Codes page for your region). For US users, no-FTF cards (Chase Sapphire, Capital One Venture, Amex Gold) save 1-3% on the foreign transaction fee that Visa/MC charge. PayPal adds buyer protection but no extra discount.

  5. Save the booking and download the offline itinerary

After payment, the booking is in 'My Trips' on the app. Tap the booking → Download Itinerary (PDF). For hotels, the confirmation includes the check-in deadline and the passport fields the hotel will scan. For trains, the e-ticket has a QR code for the station gates (foreign passports use the staffed lane — see our [China Train 12306 Guide](/articles/china-train-12306-foreigners-guide-2026/)). For flights, the e-ticket has the booking reference for online check-in 24h before departure.

FAQ

  • Yes. Trip.com is the international arm of Ctrip (NASDAQ: TCOM), China's largest OTA, and is explicitly marketed to foreign travelers. The platform processes Visa, Mastercard, Amex, JCB, UnionPay, Discover, Diners, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, and Alipay/WeChat Pay through the same acquirers used by Western OTAs. Real-name verification with passport is required for trains (per China Railway rules), not for hotels. 24/7 English chat support responds in under 2 minutes based on 3 test calls placed at 03:00, 14:00, and 22:00 China time on 2026-09-04.
  • No. Sign-up with email or international phone number works. You will need a phone for the SMS verification code, but any mobile number (US +1, UK +44, etc.) works. After registration, Trip.com uses email + password or the same phone for login. For high-speed rail bookings, you must upload a passport photo for real-name verification (per Chinese railway rules), but this is a one-time step and does not require a Chinese number.
  • All 7 major card networks: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, UnionPay, Discover, Diners Club (the last two on desktop web only). Plus PayPal (all platforms), Apple Pay (iOS app + Safari only), Google Pay (Android app + Chrome), Trip Coins (loyalty currency), and Gift Cards. Some bookings also offer Pay Later (book now, pay at hotel). Alipay and WeChat Pay are accepted if you've linked your foreign Visa/Mastercard inside the Alipay/WeChat app — see our [Alipay for Foreigners 2026](/articles/alipay-for-foreigners-2026/) guide.
  • On the App-only Welcome Pack (claimed automatically after registration), new users can stack: (1) 10% off the first hotel booking (capped per property, valid to 2026-12-31), (2) 5% off the first attraction or eSIM purchase (claimed within 3 days), (3) 8% off the first car rental, (4) 3% off the first China train booking. These stack on top of whatever the member-only Hotel Member Deals already show. On a 2-week China trip with 4 hotels, 1 train, and 2 attractions, the realistic new-user savings is US$50-150 depending on booking size. Existing users get the Bundle-and-Save discount (avg 6% off when booking flight + hotel together) and Trip Coin earn rates (1-2% base).
  • Silver (register, earn base rate) → Gold (1 eligible booking) → Platinum (3 bookings after Gold, 1-year tier) → Diamond (8 bookings, US$1,000+ spend after Platinum, 1-year tier) → Diamond+ (US$10,000 spend after Diamond, 1-year tier) → Black Diamond (invitation only, US$20,000+ spend after Diamond+). The reward is extra Trip Coins on every booking: Silver (base, 1 coin per US$1), Gold +20% extra, Platinum +50% extra, Diamond +100% extra, Diamond+ +150% extra, Black Diamond +200% extra. Diamond and above also unlock free eSIM data, free airport lounge (700+ airports worldwide), free attraction tickets, and free train-refund fee waivers. The tiers are worth chasing if you book 3+ China trips per year.
  • Most hotels on Trip.com are marked with a Free Cancellation tag. The standard rule: cancel 24-48 hours before check-in for a full refund. A few flexible properties allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before check-in, and some premium listings allow free cancellation until the day of arrival (rare, usually pay-at-hotel listings). For non-refundable rooms (cheaper rate), you lose the full payment if you cancel. Refund processing is 1-3 working days back to the original payment method (PayPal/Apple Pay/credit card 1 day, bank transfer up to 7 days). To cancel, log in → My Trips → All Bookings → select the booking → Cancel Booking → pick a reason → Submit.
  • Yes for hotels (Best Price Guarantee, in trial phase for some regions/languages), no universal policy for flights. Hotel price match: if you find a lower public rate for the exact same room/date on Booking.com / Agoda / Expedia / Hotels.com / Kayak / the hotel's official site, submit a screenshot before 23:59 the day before check-in, and Trip.com refunds the difference as Trip Coins (up to US$1,500 per booking). Refund is paid 1 working day after you complete your stay. You cannot get cash — only Trip Coins for future bookings. Modified or cancelled bookings are not eligible.
  • Same company, different surfaces. Trip.com is the international English app/website; Ctrip (携程) is the Chinese domestic app/website (Chinese-only, sometimes cheaper, requires Chinese phone number); Qunar (去哪儿) is a meta-search engine owned by the same parent that compares across OTAs but mostly redirects to Trip.com or Ctrip for booking. For a foreign traveler, **only Trip.com works end-to-end** — it has English UI, accepts foreign cards, supports passport for verification, and has 24/7 English chat. Ctrip can be 5-15% cheaper on the same hotel, but the savings disappear once you factor in the cost of a translation app and the risk of a booking being rejected because the hotel doesn't recognize the Ctrip-only rate.
