Pingyao is a small city in Shanxi province, 700 km southwest of Beijing, that contains the best-preserved Ming-dynasty walled city in China. The 6-km city wall, the cobblestone streets inside, and 4,000+ traditional courtyard residences (ๅๅ้ข) are intact from the 14th century. UNESCO World Heritage since 1997. The city is also the birthplace of the first draft bank in China โ Rishengchang (ๆฅๅๆ), founded 1823, which pioneered the practice of writing checks (ๆฑ็ฅจ) and operated branches across the Qing empire. Pingyao is small enough to see in 1-2 days but atmospheric enough to merit a 3-night stay. The city has a managed tourism model: 24-hour wall access (ยฅ125) lets you walk the full perimeter; the inside is largely pedestrianized. Combine with a side trip to the Qiao Family Compound (ไนๅฎถๅคง้ข) โ a Qing-era merchant mansion 30 km north โ and the Wang Family Compound (็ๅฎถๅคง้ข), an even larger 25-hectare complex 50 km south.
