How to use this card

  1. Save the image to your phone before traveling. We recommend screenshotting all 12 rescue cards and saving them to a dedicated โ€œChina Travelโ€ album on your phone, so theyโ€™re available offline.
  2. Open the image when a vendor shakes their head at your phone or card and you realize you have zero cash.
  3. Show the Chinese text (top half of the card) to the vendor or a passing local. The pinyin is there as backup if they want to read it phonetically.
  4. Read the English translation to understand their response โ€” theyโ€™ll usually point or hand you back your phone with a map.

What they will likely say

  • โ€œๅ–ๆฌพๆœบๅœจ้‚ฃ่พนโ€ (ATM is over there) โ€” Theyโ€™ll point toward a bank ATM. Most Chinese bank ATMs accept Visa, Mastercard, and UnionPay.
  • โ€œๅŽปไพฟๅˆฉๅบ—ๆขโ€ (Go to a convenience store to break it) โ€” A FamilyMart or 7-Eleven can break a ยฅ100 bill if you need change.
  • โ€œๆ‰ซๆˆ‘็š„็ โ€ (Scan my QR) โ€” The vendor is offering to let you pay them via their personal QR code. Show your Alipay or WeChat Pay QR.
  • โ€œๆˆ‘ๅŽปๅธฎไฝ ๆขโ€ (Iโ€™ll go change it for you) โ€” A kind passerby might offer to swap foreign currency or large bills. Use your judgment.

Pro tips

  • Always carry ยฅ200โ€“500 in small bills (ยฅ10, ยฅ20, ยฅ50). Most vendors in smaller cities and at night markets still prefer cash.
  • Look for a green or blue China Construction Bank (CCB) / ICBC / Bank of China ATM โ€” these almost always accept foreign Visa/Mastercard cards. ATMs inside convenience stores usually charge a ยฅ10โ€“20 fee.
  • Withdraw at a major bank branch ATM, not a convenience store ATM โ€” bank ATMs have a higher foreign-card success rate and a higher daily limit (usually ยฅ2,500โ€“3,000 per transaction).
  • Set up Alipay AND WeChat Pay as a backup before your trip. The one that fails for a vendor often works at the next one.
  • Screenshots work offline โ€” make sure you have the image saved to your phone, not just bookmarked in a browser.

When this wonโ€™t help

If every nearby ATM also rejects your card, this card wonโ€™t solve it. Instead:

  • Try a different ATM brand โ€” Bank of China, ICBC, CCB, and Agricultural Bank of China all have different foreign-card policies.
  • Use UnionPay if your home bank issued one โ€” UnionPay cards have the highest acceptance in China by a wide margin.
  • Go to a major hotel or bank branch and ask to use their counter exchange service โ€” they can convert USD/EUR/GBP cash to RMB.
  • Ask your hotel front desk to help you find an ATM that works โ€” they deal with this every week and know which branch is foreigner-friendly.
