How to use this card
- Save it before you travel. Download the whole pack from /rescue-cards/ and it works offline — no app, no data plan.
- Show the big Chinese line to whoever you are talking to. They read characters; the English at the bottom is for you.
- Say it out loud too if they hesitate. A spoken request gets a faster answer than a silent card, and repeating it removes all doubt.
- Read the English to understand the reply.
What they will likely say
- “在那边,右边走到底。” — Over there — go right to the end.
- “出门左转。” — Turn left when you go out.
- “一楼有,二楼没有。” — There is one on the first floor, none on the second.
- “收费的,一块钱。” — It costs one yuan.
Pro tips
- Public toilets charge ¥1–2 and hand you toilet paper. Carry small change; a ¥100 note in a street toilet is a genuine problem.
- The signs say 洗手间, 卫生间, 公厕 or 男/女 (men/women). 厕 is the one character worth recognising, and it looks the same in every one of them.
- In a restaurant, asking this while your table number is visible is normal and gets you pointed at the nearest one rather than to the door.
