Daocheng Yading Scenic Guide: Three Sacred Mountains & Alpine Lakes

Daocheng Yading in Sichuan is a 4,000-6,032m reserve with three sacred peaks and Milk Lake. Covers ¥146-266 tickets, Chengdu flights, hiking, altitude prep.

By TravelHubChina Editorial 12 min read

Daocheng Yading (稻城亚丁, Daocheng Yading) sits in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau in western Sichuan, 800 km west of Chengdu. The “Yading” half of the name is Tibetan for “the place facing the sun.” The 1,344 sq km nature reserve was protected in 2001 and in 2020 became a UNESCO World Heritage buffer zone as part of the Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries extension — see how Yading compares with Jiuzhaigou and other Chinese scenic wonders on the same UNESCO list.

Three snow-capped peaks dominate the reserve and form the heart of Tibetan Buddhist worship in the region. The lowest visitor elevation in the park is the Yading village trailhead at 2,900m, the highest viewpoint is the Five Color Lake overlook at 4,500m, and the three summits rise to 5,958-6,032m. Most visitors fly into Daocheng town, sleep one night at 3,750m, and then day-hike to the lakes. If you want a similar alpine-lake experience with warmer weather and easier access, our Jiuzhaigou scenic guide covers Sichuan’s most-photographed turquoise-water park, a 1h 10m flight from Chengdu; for the most cinematic vertical landscape in China, see our Zhangjiajie scenic guide. The trip has been popular since the 2016 Chinese film “Paths of the Soul” (冈仁波齐) featured Yading’s lakes in its opening shot, and visitor numbers have grown from 50,000 per year in 2010 to over 1.5 million per year in 2024.

How to plan your 3-day trip

Day 1 - Arrive and acclimatize

Fly Chengdu-Daocheng in 1h 15m, take the airport bus to town (1h 20m, ¥30). Check into a hotel with oxygen supply. Walk slowly, drink water, eat light. Do not hike. If you have a spare half day, the Bang River and White Tower walk in town is flat and a good acclimatization stroll. If symptoms of altitude sickness appear (headache, nausea, dizziness), stay in bed, drink water, and avoid alcohol. Diamox 125mg twice daily is available at any pharmacy without prescription.

Day 2 - Yading park, Luorong Pasture to Milk Lake

First shuttle bus 6:30 AM. Take the bus to the visitor center, then the electric bus to Luorong Pasture. Hike the 5.6 km each way to Milk Lake, return by 2:00 PM. Optional: add the 1.5 km spur to Five Color Lake. Afternoon: visit Pearl Lake from Chonggu Temple. Last bus back to town 7:00 PM. Eat dinner at one of the Tibetan restaurants in town (yak hotpot, butter tea, tsampa) for early sleep.

Day 3 - Buffer or fly out

Use the buffer day for altitude recovery, photograph the three peaks from the Gonghe viewpoint, or visit a nearby Tibetan monastery. Most visitors fly back to Chengdu on the afternoon flight. If driving, this is the day to start the Xiangcheng-Daocheng highway return, with overnight in Litang.

Option B - 4-5 days with overland return

Add 1-2 days for a slower ascent and a half day at Litang (4,014m) on the overland route. Litang is a major Tibetan town with a working monastery, horse-racing festival in August, and the fastest acclimatization path before Daocheng. The road from Litang to Daocheng crosses two 4,000m+ passes and offers views of the Genyen massif (6,204m) on a clear day.

Tickets, booking, and payment

The Yading entry fee is ¥146 per person (May 1 to November 30, the official peak season). The off-season rate (December 1 to April 30) is ¥120. The shuttle bus between the visitor center and the trailhead is mandatory and costs ¥120 per person, valid for one calendar day. Inside the park, electric buses add:

  • Yading village to Luorong Pasture: ¥60 round trip
  • Yading village to Chonggu Temple: ¥20 one-way
  • Yading village to Gonghe viewpoint: ¥20 one-way

How to book:

  • At the visitor center in Daocheng town - passport required, cash or Alipay/WeChat. The ticket activates on first use and is valid for 2 calendar days.
  • Trip.com - English, accepts foreign Visa/Mastercard, sends confirmation email. 5% service fee, slightly higher than gate price.
  • Alipay mini-program - search 稻城亚丁, pick the date, pay with foreign card if linked. E-ticket loads into your Alipay wallet.

Free entry: Children under 1.2m, seniors over 65 (with passport). Students with valid Chinese ID get 50% off.

What is NOT included:

  • Electric buses inside the park (¥20-60 per segment)
  • Yading village hotel stay (separate from town)
  • Guide (¥300-500 per group, optional but recommended)
  • Horse at Luorong Pasture (¥300 to a point 2 km from Milk Lake, but the last 3 km must be hiked)

Getting there and around

By air: Daocheng Yading Airport (DCY). The airport opened in 2013 and is the highest commercial airport in the world at 4,411m elevation. Direct flights from Chengdu (1h 15m, 3-4 daily), and limited seasonal flights from Chongqing, Hangzhou, and Guangzhou. Round trip from Chengdu is ¥1,200-2,400 in October. Book 4-6 weeks ahead for autumn. The airport has an oxygen lounge (free, 30-minute use) for visitors feeling unwell on arrival.

By road (overland): The G318 national highway from Chengdu goes through Ya’an, Kangding, Litang, and Daocheng, total 800 km, 2 days driving with an overnight stop in Litang or Kangding. For a different Sichuan take once you’re back in Chengdu, our Sichuan cuisine guide covers the regional dishes (mapo tofu, hotpot, dan dan noodles) you’ll want to eat after altitude recovery. The road crosses 4 passes above 4,000m and is paved throughout. Altitude gain is gradual and most travelers acclimatize better than flying direct. Long-distance bus from Chengdu Xinnanmen Bus Station to Daocheng takes 18-20 hours, ¥280-350.

Inside the park: Free shuttle between Yading village and the main gate is included in the ticket. Electric buses inside the park run every 15-20 minutes from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Most of the park is a foot-only zone, so bring proper hiking shoes. English is limited; download a translation app (Pleco) and save key Chinese names: 仙乃日, 央迈勇, 夏诺多吉, 洛绒牛场, 牛奶海, 五色海, 冲古寺, 珍珠海.

When to go and what to expect

The park operates year-round but conditions vary sharply by season:

Late September to mid-October (autumn gold). Peak season. The birch and larch forests turn gold and the snow line is low on the peaks. Stable weather, clear mornings, occasional afternoon cloud. Crowds are high; book hotels 2-3 weeks ahead. Temperatures: -5C to 15C.

Late May to mid-June (wildflowers). Secondary peak. Alpine meadows bloom in May-June at 4,000-4,300m. Stable weather, fewer crowds than October. Temperatures: 0C to 18C. Some electric bus routes may still be off-season.

July-August (rainy). Avoid if possible. 50% of annual precipitation falls in these two months. Trail to Luorong Pasture closes for 2-3 days at a time after heavy rain. Landslide risk on the overland highway. Temperatures: 5C to 20C.

November-April (winter). Quiet, beautiful, very cold. Temperatures: -15C to 5C. Lakes may freeze. Some electric bus routes reduced. Hotels at 50% summer prices. Best for photography with empty trails and dramatic snow on the peaks.

What to bring

  • Altitude medication - Diamox (acetazolamide) 125mg, start 24 hours before arrival. Available at pharmacies in Chengdu or Daocheng. Consult a doctor if you have heart, lung, or kidney conditions.
  • Layered clothing - Mornings are -5 to 5C even in October, midday 12-18C. A down jacket, fleece, and windbreaker are all needed.
  • Hiking poles - Essential for the last 2 km of the Milk Lake trail, which climbs 400m on loose scree. Rent at Daocheng town shops for ¥20/day.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen - UV index at 4,500m reaches 11+ in summer. Snow blindness is a real risk even in autumn.
  • Water (2-3L) - There is one small vendor station at Luorong Pasture (¥15/bottle). Fill bottles in Daocheng town before entering.
  • Trekking shoes with ankle support - The trail is rocky. Running shoes are not adequate for the upper sections.
  • Cash (¥500-800) - Small vendors and horse operators prefer cash. Most hotels accept Alipay. Foreign cards are rarely accepted outside the airport.
  • Hand warmers and gloves - October mornings at 4,500m are well below freezing. Disposable hand warmers are sold in Daocheng for ¥3 each.

Hike difficulty cheat sheet

Daocheng Yading is high-altitude hiking (the park floor is at 3,800m, summit is 4,720m). Almost every hike is above 4,000m where altitude sickness is the bigger risk than terrain. Acclimatize 1-2 days in Daocheng town (3,750m) before attempting any strenuous route.

TrailDistanceTimeElevationDifficulty
Yading village → Chonggu Temple (冲古寺)5 km one-way1-1.5 h (bus + walk)+100 m (mostly flat)Easy — sightseeing bus + paved path
Chonggu Temple → Luorong Pasture (洛绒牛场)7 km one-way2-3 h (bus covers most)+200 m (optional walk)Moderate — wooden boardwalk, flat grassland
Luorong Pasture → Milk Lake (牛奶海)5.6 km each way3-4 h round-trip+400 m (4,100m → 4,500m)Strenuous — rocky path, very thin air
Luorong Pasture → Five Color Lake (五色海)6.1 km each way3.5-4.5 h round-trip+450 m (4,100m → 4,720m)Strenuous — same trail as Milk Lake, 20 min extra to higher lake
Chonggu → Pearl Lake (珍珠海)1.5 km each way1 h round-trip+50 mEasy — short detour from Chonggu Temple

Best for backpackers: take the sightseeing bus to Luorong Pasture (¥120 round-trip), hike to Milk Lake (5.6 km, 3-4 h round-trip), and stop at Five Color Lake on the way back if energy allows. Do not attempt the full Chonggu→Luorong→Milk Lake→Five Color Lake→Pearl Lake circuit in one day — that’s 20+ km at 4,000-4,700m and a recipe for altitude sickness. Split into 2 days if you have the time, or take the bus between Chonggu and Luorong to save energy for the high-altitude section.

The 5 photo spots that matter

  1. Gonghe viewpoint (贡嘎冲古). The classic wide-angle shot. Three snow peaks in a row, the highest being Chenresig at 6,032m. The viewpoint is on the main road, 8 km from the visitor center, accessible by the electric bus (¥20). Best at sunrise (7:00 AM in October) when the peaks turn pink before the sun reaches the valley.
  2. Pearl Lake (珍珠海). A small lake at 4,150m with the most perfect mirror reflection of Chenresig in the reserve. A 1.5 km walk from Chonggu Temple. Best at sunrise on a still morning, before wind picks up. Tripod required for sharp mirror shots.
  3. Luorong Pasture (洛绒牛场). The flat valley at 4,100m with yaks grazing and the three peaks in the background. The most-photographed spot inside the park. Best light is afternoon, when the sun lights the peaks from behind you. Bring a telephoto for yak close-ups.
  4. Milk Lake (牛奶海). A turquoise lake at 4,500m ringed by the three peaks. The color comes from suspended calcium carbonate. Best viewed from the overlook 100m above the lake, reached after 3 hours of hiking. Light is best 10:00 AM to noon.
  5. Five Color Lake (五色海). A 300m further climb from Milk Lake at 4,500m. The colors shift with the sun angle from green to blue to gold. Most visitors skip this because the climb is steep and the gain is small. Worth it on a clear day for the wide view across the entire reserve.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Flying direct without acclimatization. The Daocheng airport is at 4,411m - higher than any other commercial airport on earth. The 1h 15m climb from Chengdu (500m) is a shock to most visitors. Spend 2 nights in Daocheng town if you have any history of altitude sickness.
  • Starting the Milk Lake hike after 9:00 AM. The trail is 5.6 km each way at 4,000m+ elevation. Most visitors need 3-4 hours each way. Starting late means you are above 4,500m at 1:00 PM in the worst weather, and the electric bus stops running at 5:00 PM.
  • Underestimating the weather. The park sits in a rain shadow but afternoon thunderstorms are common July-August. October mornings can be -5C. The road to Luorong Pasture closes for 2-3 days after major rain even in peak season.
  • Driving yourself in the dark. Most park roads are unlit after sunset. The mountain switchbacks are narrow with no guard rails in places. If driving, plan to be off the road by 6:00 PM.
  • Riding the horse to the lakes. Horses only go to a point 2 km from Milk Lake (¥300 one way). The last 2.6 km is too steep and rocky for horses, so you have to hike anyway. Most independent travelers skip the horse.
  • Trusting Google Maps. Google services are blocked in China. Use Amap (高德地图) for navigation. Inside the park, paper maps are available at the visitor center (¥10) - Chinese only but the layout is clear.
  • Buying a “guided tour” that does not include altitude prep. Many low-cost tour operators from Chengdu sell 2-day bus tours that arrive at Daocheng town at noon and hike to Milk Lake the next morning. Roughly 20% of participants in these tours end up with altitude sickness severe enough to require descent. If you book a tour, choose one that includes 2 nights in Daocheng town before the hike.

Where to stay

  • Daocheng town (3,750m) - the main staging area. Budget: Daocheng Tibetan Inn, Yading Homeland (¥200-350/night). Mid-range: Yading Airport Hotel, Snow Mountain Holiday (¥400-700/night). All mid-range hotels have oxygen-supplied rooms; budget hotels usually do not. Stay 2 nights.
  • Yading village (2,900m) - 1 km before the trailhead, inside the park gate area. Lower elevation, good for the first night. Yading Village Inn, Snow Mountain Inn (¥200-400/night). No oxygen, but the elevation is easier.
  • Litang (4,014m) - 150 km north of Daocheng, on the overland route. Better acclimatization than Daocheng because the town is on a plateau, not in a valley. Litang Khan Hotel, Yumbulagang Inn (¥200-500/night).

Local food in Daocheng

Tibetan food is the local specialty and most restaurants in town close by 9:00 PM. Yak hotpot (牦牛火锅) is the signature dish, ¥80-150 per person. Butter tea (酥油茶) is the local drink, salty rather than sweet, served hot in every Tibetan restaurant. Tsampa (青稞面) is roasted barley flour mixed with butter tea, the traditional Tibetan staple. Sichuan and Qinghai noodle shops are common in town center for travelers who want a break from Tibetan food, ¥20-30 per bowl. Bring a reusable water bottle - tap water in Daocheng town is not potable; bottled water is ¥5-10 per 500ml.

Cultural context: the three sacred peaks

The three peaks each represent a Tibetan Buddhist deity. Chenresig (6,032m, the highest) is the bodhisattva of compassion; Jambeyang (5,958m) is the bodhisattva of wisdom; Chanadorje (5,958m) is the protector deity. Pilgrims walk clockwise around the peaks, a 130 km circuit that takes 3-5 days, as a religious practice. The lakes (Milk Lake, Five Color Lake, Pearl Lake) are considered holy - the colors are said to change with the mood of the deities. While visiting, walk clockwise around the prayer wheels and stupas at Chonggu Temple, and never point cameras or feet at the altars. The annual Monihei Genyen Festival (June 4 of the Tibetan calendar) draws thousands of pilgrims for chanting and butter-lamp offerings.

Step by step

  1. Fly Chengdu to Daocheng Yading Airport (DCY)

Direct flights from Chengdu Shuangliu (CTU) take 1h 15m and run 3-4 times daily on Sichuan Airlines and China Southern. Round trip from Chengdu is ¥1,200-2,400 in peak season (October). Airport to Daocheng town is 50 km, 1h 20m by airport bus (¥30) or shared taxi (¥80 per person). There is no rail to Daocheng.

  2. Spend 1-2 nights acclimatizing in Daocheng town

Daocheng town (3,750m) is the staging area. Stay at a hotel with oxygen supply (most mid-range hotels pump oxygen into rooms at night, ¥50-100 supplement). Budget hotels ¥200-350/night (Daocheng Tibetan Inn, Yading Homeland); mid-range ¥400-700 (Yading Airport Hotel, Snow Mountain Holiday). Walk slowly on day 1, drink barley tea, eat light Tibetan dishes. Do not hike.

  3. Buy the Yading entry ticket (¥146) and shuttle bus (¥120)

Buy at the visitor center in Daocheng town the day before, or in the morning before the first bus. The shuttle is mandatory and runs from the visitor center to the Yading village trailhead (38 km, 1 hour). Inside the park, electric buses connect Yading village to Luorong Pasture (¥60 round trip) and to Chonggu Temple (¥20 one-way). Keep your passport with you for ticket checks.

  4. Drive or take the bus to Yading village trailhead

The 38 km road from the visitor center to the Yading village trailhead takes 1 hour by shuttle bus. If you have your own 4WD (rented in Daocheng for ¥400-600/day), you can drive yourself and stop at the Gonghe viewpoint (the famous wide-angle shot of the three sacred peaks). The first bus is 6:30 AM, last return is 7:00 PM.

  5. Hike from Luorong Pasture to Milk Lake and Five Color Lake

Take the electric bus from Yading village to Luorong Pasture (4,100m). The hike to Milk Lake is 5.6 km each way, gaining 400m. The first 3 km is a gentle valley walk along a stream. The last 2.6 km is steep, with a final 1.5 km spur to Five Color Lake. Allow 5-6 hours round trip. Most visitors reach Milk Lake and skip Five Color Lake. Start by 7:00 AM.

  6. Add a half day for Chonggu Temple and Pearl Lake

On day 2, take the short shuttle to Chonggu Temple (3,880m). The temple is small but the view of the three sacred peaks is the classic Daocheng postcard. A 1.5 km walk brings you to Pearl Lake (Zhenzhu Hai, 4,150m), the most photogenic of the lower lakes with a perfect mirror reflection of Chenresig peak. Allow 3 hours round trip.

  7. Return to Daocheng town and fly out the next morning

Most visitors fly out on day 3. If returning to Chengdu, allow 4-7 days for the overland loop (Chengdu-Kangding-Litang-Daocheng, then fly back from Daocheng) which crosses four 4,000m+ passes. If driving, the Xiangcheng-Daocheng highway is the safer route, paved since 2017.

  8. Download offline maps and translation before arrival

Google Maps does not work in China. Use Amap (Gaode) or Apple Maps. Download Pleco dictionary for offline Chinese-English. The park has English signs at major viewpoints, but bus announcements and local restaurants are Chinese-only. Save the Chinese names for the three peaks: 仙乃日 (Chenresig, 6,032m), 央迈勇 (Jambeyang, 5,958m), 夏诺多吉 (Chanadorje, 5,958m).

FAQ

  • 3 days is the practical minimum. Day 1: arrive Daocheng (3,750m), rest, hydrate, do not hike. Day 2: full day at Yading park, drive to Luorong Pasture (4,100m), then the 5-6 hour round trip to Milk Lake and Five Color Lake (4,500m). Day 3: buffer or short village walk before flying out. Less than 3 days risks altitude sickness and rushed summit hikes.
  • Yes, but you must acclimatize in Daocheng town for at least 1 night first. The round trip from Luorong Pasture base to Milk Lake is 5.6 km each way, 4-6 hours total, gaining 400m. The last 1.5 km to Five Color Lake is steeper. Most visitors reach Milk Lake and skip Five Color Lake to save 60-90 minutes. Start the hike at 7:00 AM to be back at the bus by 2:00 PM.
  • Yes, this is the single biggest risk. Daocheng town is 3,750m and the lakes are 4,500m. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) hits roughly 30-50% of visitors arriving from below 2,500m. Symptoms: headache, nausea, insomnia. Prevention: spend 1-2 nights in Daocheng before hiking, drink 3-4L water per day, avoid alcohol on day 1, consider Diamox (acetazolamide) 125mg twice daily starting 24 hours before arrival. Anyone with heart or lung conditions should consult a doctor before traveling.
  • Late September to mid-October for autumn colors, when the birch and larch forests turn gold against the snow peaks. Late May to mid-June is a second peak for wildflowers and stable weather. July-August is the rainy season (50% of annual precipitation) and the road to Luorong Pasture is often closed by landslides. November-April is winter with deep snow and -15C nights; the park stays open but the lakes may freeze.
  • No permit is required for foreign tourists. A guide is not mandatory but strongly recommended for the Milk Lake route because the trail has multiple unmarked junctions, weather changes fast, and altitude emergencies require local knowledge. Day guides cost ¥300-500 per group of 1-4 people, bookable through your hotel in Daocheng town. Independent hiking is possible with a paper map (¥10 at the park gate) and a GPS app.
  • Buy at the park gate with passport (cash or Alipay/WeChat), or pre-buy via Trip.com (English, accepts Visa/Mastercard, 5% service fee), or via the Daocheng Smart Tour mini-program inside Alipay. Foreigners pay the same ¥146 entry as Chinese citizens. The ¥120 shuttle bus ticket is mandatory and is the same for all visitors. No foreigner surcharge.
