Five-Flower Lake in Jiuzhaigou Valley in autumn, Sichuan, China, with crystal-clear turquoise water reflecting golden birch and red maple trees, fallen leaves floating on the still surface

Jiuzhaigou Scenic Guide: Five-Color Lakes, Waterfalls, Autumn (2026)

Jiuzhaigou Valley in Sichuan is a UNESCO World Heritage site with turquoise multi-level lakes, 18+ waterfalls, and 220 sq km of forest. This guide covers the Y-shaped valley plan, ticket prices (¥190+¥90 bus), when to go for autumn colors, Huanglong nearby, and altitude tips.

Jiuzhaigou (九寨沟, Jiǔzhàigōu, literally “Nine Village Valley”) is in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of northern Sichuan, about 400 km north of Chengdu. The park covers 720 sq km; 220 sq km is the core scenic area, a Y-shaped valley of 118 turquoise lakes, 18+ named waterfalls, and old-growth forest at 2,000-3,100m elevation. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992 and added to UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere programme in 1997. For context on how Jiuzhaigou stacks up against China’s other top scenic wonders, see our China scenic wonders comparison. For the best months to visit, late September to late October is the autumn-color window.

The park’s worst disaster was the August 2017 earthquake (magnitude 7.0), which closed the park for 4 years. It partially reopened in 2018, fully reopened in 2021, and is now under strict daily visitor caps (41,000/day in peak season). The post-earthquake rebuild included upgraded boardwalks, new bus stops, and a much-improved trail system. The lakes are in better condition than before the earthquake in many places.

How to plan your 1-, 2-, or 3-day trip

Option A: 1 day (rushed, but possible)

Take the first bus at 7:00 AM, ride to the end of the road, and walk downhill through Shuzheng Valley. The most important stops: Nuorilang Waterfall, Shuzheng Lakes, Five-Flower Lake (you can reach it via the Rize branch, then return), and Long Lake. Cover 30-40% of the park. Last bus back to the gate is 6:00 PM.

  • Day 1 — Shuzheng Valley (the lower arm). 14 km, 5-6 hours including stops.
  • Day 2 — Rize Valley and Zechawa Valley (the two upper arms). 18 km, 6-7 hours including stops.

Option C: 3 days (with Huanglong)

  • Day 1: Arrive, acclimatize in Jiuzhaigou town (1,400m altitude).
  • Day 2: Shuzheng Valley.
  • Day 3: Rize and Zechawa valleys. OR Huanglong instead of one of the valley days.

The 3 valleys explained

The park is shaped like a Y:

  • Shuzheng Valley (树正沟) — the lower arm, runs from the park gate to Nuorilang. 14 km, 30+ lakes, the Shuzheng Waterfall, Reed Lake, and Sparkling Lake. The most accessible and the most-visited.
  • Rize Valley (日则沟) — the right (west) arm, from Nuorilang up to the Primeval Forest. 18 km, 18+ lakes, the Five-Flower Lake (the most-photographed), Pearl Shoal Waterfall, and Mirror Lake. The most photogenic.
  • Zechawa Valley (则查洼沟) — the left (east) arm, from Nuorilang up to the Long Lake. 10 km, 6+ lakes, including Long Lake (the highest at 3,100m and deepest at 103m) and Five-Color Pond. The quietest.

The classic 2-day plan: Day 1 is Shuzheng (lower arm). Day 2 is Rize and Zechawa (the two upper arms), via the Nuorilang interchange. Both days start and end at the park gate.

The 5 must-see spots

  1. Five-Flower Lake (五花海). The most-photographed spot in the park. Turquoise water, fallen logs visible 30m below the surface, autumn leaves on the bottom. Best from the elevated boardwalk on the north side, mid-morning when the sun is overhead. 5-min walk from the Five-Flower Lake bus stop.
  2. Nuorilang Waterfall (诺日朗瀑布). The widest travertine waterfall in the park, 320m wide and 78m tall. Reachable directly from the Nuorilang bus stop — 2-min walk. The only waterfall in the park visible from the road.
  3. Long Lake (长海). The highest and deepest lake, 7.5 km long, up to 103m deep, at 3,100m. The water is an intense cobalt blue in autumn. A 10-min walk from the Long Lake bus stop. No walking path around the lake; the viewpoint is the only access.
  4. Pearl Shoal Waterfall (珍珠滩瀑布). Famous from the opening scene of the 1986 film Journey to the West. The water cascades over a wide travertine shelf. Best at sunrise when the backlight catches the spray. 10-min walk from the Pearl Shoal bus stop.
  5. Mirror Lake (镜海). The calmest lake in the park; on still mornings it reflects the surrounding peaks like a mirror. Best in the early morning before the bus crowds arrive. 2-min walk from the Mirror Lake bus stop.

Getting there and around

By air: Jiuzhaigou Huanglong Airport (JZH) — actually serves both parks, 88 km from Jiuzhaigou entrance. Direct flights from Chengdu (1h 10m, ¥700-1,200), Beijing (2h 50m), Shanghai (3h 10m), Xi’an (1h 40m), Guangzhou (2h 30m), Kunming (1h 30m). Airport shuttle to Jiuzhaigou town: ¥50, 2 hours. For full flight-booking tips and the 2026 fare structure, see our China domestic flights guide. To extend the trip into the regional cuisine (Sichuan food, Tibetan yak butter tea, Chengdu snacks), see our Sichuan cuisine guide.

By HSR: Huanglong Jiuzhai Railway Station (黄胜关站), opened 2024. 2 hours from Chengdu (¥150 second class). The station is 60 km from Jiuzhaigou entrance; shuttle bus ¥50, 1.5 hours.

By bus: Long-distance buses from Chengdu’s Chadianzi Bus Station (10 hours, ¥170) and Mianyang (8 hours, ¥150). The road is winding and slow. Not recommended.

Inside the park: The sightseeing bus is mandatory. You cannot walk the main road. The bus runs 7:00 AM - 6:00 PM, every 15-20 min. There are 20+ stops; the main ones are at the trailheads, lake viewpoints, and interchange points (Nuorilang for switching valleys).

Altitude and health

Jiuzhaigou is at altitude. The valley floor is 2,000m, the highest lake (Long Lake) is 3,100m. Chengdu, by contrast, is 500m. Most visitors feel mild symptoms on day 1 (headache, fatigue, mild shortness of breath) which pass in 24-48 hours.

Tips:

  • Drink 3-4L of water daily for the first 2 days
  • Avoid alcohol for the first 48 hours
  • Take it easy on day 1 — walk slowly, rest often
  • Diamox (acetazolamide) is available at Chengdu pharmacies without prescription; 125mg twice daily starting the day before you fly is the standard dose
  • If symptoms are severe (persistent headache, vomiting, confusion), descend to Jiuzhaigou town (1,400m) immediately

What to bring

  • Layers — even in summer, mornings at 2,000-3,100m are 5-12°C. A fleece plus a windbreaker.
  • Sturdy shoes — boardwalks and stone steps. Sneakers are fine for the bus stops; hiking shoes better for the longer walks.
  • Rain gear — packable rain jacket. Disposable ponchos (¥10) sold in the park.
  • Water (2L minimum) — vendors at the major stops charge ¥10-15 per bottle. Bring a refillable bottle.
  • Sunscreen — UV is strong at altitude.
  • Cash (¥200-300) — small vendors may not accept mobile pay.
  • Power bank — no outlets at the viewpoints.
  • Motion-sickness pills — the bus ride to the airport and the winding roads are intense.

Hike difficulty cheat sheet

Jiuzhaigou is almost all boardwalk — flat, paved, and easy. The “hiking” is really just walking between lakes via the park’s wooden boardwalk system. Total elevation change in the entire park is under 100m. The only “strenuous” parts are the day-long distances if you try to cover all 3 valleys in one go (50+ km via the sightseeing bus + walking).

TrailDistanceTimeElevationDifficulty
Shuzheng Valley boardwalk (树正沟)4 km linear2-3 hflatEasy — wooden boardwalk along 19 lakes
Rize Valley to Five Color Lake (日则沟)5 km linear (most via bus)2-3 hflatEasy — boardwalk, plus bus to skip back
Zechawa Valley to Long Lake (则查洼沟)4 km linear (most via bus)2 hflatEasy — short walk to Long Lake terminus
Nuorilang Waterfall viewpoint0.5 km20 minflatEasy — main waterfall overlook
3-valley full circuit (with bus between)~10 km walking + 40 km bus6-8 hflatEasy-Moderate (long day) — full coverage in one day

Best for backpackers: the 3-valley full circuit is the standard 1-day route. Take the sightseeing bus between the valley heads (it’s mandatory) and walk each valley’s boardwalk section (1-3 km each). Allow 6-8 hours including bus time + photo stops. The park opens at 7 AM and the last bus leaves around 6 PM, so there’s no need to rush. Altitude is 2,000-3,100m — altitude sickness is rare but bring water and a light layer for the higher valleys (Zechawa gets cold even in summer).

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Skipping the early bus. The first bus leaves the gate at 7:00 AM. The first 90 minutes after the park opens are the quietest. By 10 AM, the major spots (Five-Flower Lake, Nuorilang) are packed.
  • Walking the main road. The main road is bus-only and walking it is dangerous. Use the boardwalks and the bus stops.
  • Skipping Rize Valley because of crowds. The crowds thin out after Five-Flower Lake. The Arrow Bamboo Lake and Primeval Forest end stops are nearly empty.
  • Going on weekends or Chinese National Day. Daily visitors can hit 41,000+ on these days. The park is far more enjoyable on a weekday in October.
  • Trying to combine with Chengdu in one day. The drive or flight is 1-10 hours one-way. Plan 2-3 nights minimum.
  • Trusting Google Maps. Use Amap (高德地图) or Apple Maps. Inside the park, all signage is bilingual.

Side trip: Huanglong (黄龙)

Huanglong (Yellow Dragon) is a separate UNESCO World Heritage site 2 hours east of Jiuzhaigou. It is famous for its terraced travertine pools in shades of turquoise, gold, and white, formed by mineral-rich water flowing down a 3.5-km valley. The Huanglong main valley (五彩池, Five-Color Pools) is the most-photographed area.

  • Ticket: ¥170 in peak season (Jun-Dec), ¥60 off-season.
  • Cable car: ¥80 one-way, ¥120 round-trip. The cable car saves 1.5 hours of walking uphill.
  • Altitude: 3,100-3,600m — higher than Jiuzhaigou. If you have altitude symptoms at Jiuzhaigou, do not skip Huanglong.
  • Visit time: 4-5 hours including the cable car.
  • Stay: Huanglong town or back to Jiuzhaigou town. There is a 2-hour bus between the two (¥50).

Step by step

  1. Fly into Jiuzhaigou Huanglong Airport (JZH)

Direct flights from Chengdu (1h 10m, ¥700-1,200), Beijing (2h 50m), Shanghai (3h 10m), Xi'an (1h 40m), and 20+ other cities. The airport is 88 km from the park entrance. Airport shuttle bus to Jiuzhaigou town: ¥50, 2 hours. Taxi: ¥500. There is no HSR to Jiuzhaigou — the closest HSR station is Huanglong Jiuzhai (Huangshengguan), 60 km from the park, opened in late 2024.

  2. Stay in Jiuzhaigou town (Jiuzhaigou Goukou)

Hotels cluster around the park entrance (Goukou, 沟口). Budget: Jiuzhaigou Tibetan Youth Hostel, Jiuzhaigou Travel Youth Hostel (¥150-300/night). Mid-range: Jiuzhaigou Sheraton, Jiuzhaigou Luneng Hilton (¥600-1,200). Stay 2-3 nights; the altitude (1,400m) is lower than the park (2,000-3,100m), which helps with acclimatization.

  3. Buy the combined ticket (¥190 + ¥90 bus)

Entry ticket: ¥190 in peak season (Apr-Nov), ¥80 in off-season (Dec-Mar). Mandatory sightseeing bus: ¥90 year-round. Buy at the gate with passport, or pre-buy in Alipay (search 九寨沟). Free for children under 1.2m, half-price for 1.2-1.4m, free for seniors over 70 (passport required).

  4. Day 1 — Shuzheng Valley (the lower arm)

Take the bus to the end of the road (Nuorilang Bus Stop), then walk downhill through the valley. Stops: Nuorilang Waterfall (the widest in the park at 320m, 78m tall) → Shuzheng Lakes (a series of 19 connected lakes) → Shuzheng Waterfall → Sparkling Lake → Reed Lake. Total: 14 km, 5-6 hours including stops. Bus back to the gate from the main gate bus stop.

  5. Day 2 — Rize Valley and Zechawa Valley (the two upper arms)

Take the bus to the end of Rize Valley (Primeval Forest Bus Stop), then walk back. Stops: Primeval Forest → Swan Lake → Arrow Bamboo Lake → Five-Flower Lake (the most-photographed) → Pearl Shoal Waterfall → Mirror Lake. Then take the bus to the top of Zechawa Valley: Long Lake (the highest, deepest at 103m) → Five-Color Pond. Total: 18 km, 6-7 hours.

  6. Add Huanglong on a third day (optional but recommended)

Huanglong (黄龙, Yellow Dragon) is 2 hours east of Jiuzhaigou. UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its terraced travertine pools in shades of turquoise, yellow, and white. Ticket ¥170 (off-season ¥60). Cable car ¥80 one-way or ¥120 round-trip. Allow 4-5 hours. Combined with Jiuzhaigou on a 3-day itinerary, you need to add one night near Huanglong or back to Jiuzhaigou town.

  7. Download offline maps and translation

Google Maps is blocked in China. Use Amap (高德地图) for navigation, or Apple Maps. Inside the park, all signage is bilingual. Save these key Chinese names: 五花海 (Wǔhuā Hǎi, Five-Flower Lake), 长海 (Cháng Hǎi, Long Lake), 诺日朗瀑布 (Nuòrìlǎng Pùbù, Nuorilang Waterfall), 镜海 (Jìng Hǎi, Mirror Lake), 珍珠滩瀑布 (Zhēnzhū Tān Pùbù, Pearl Shoal Waterfall).

FAQ

  • 1 full day covers Shuzheng Valley (the lower arm, 30+ lakes and waterfalls) at a moderate pace. 2 days lets you add Rize Valley and Zechawa Valley (the two upper arms with the most-photographed lakes: Five-Flower Lake and Long Lake). 3 days is for adding Huanglong (2 hours away, the colorful travertine pools). Less than 1 day misses most of the park.
  • Late September to late October for the autumn colors — the leaves turn gold, orange, and red over 4-6 weeks. Late October to early November for the first snow. Spring (April-May) has rhododendron blooms. Summer (June-August) is the wettest, with 30-40% of days affected by rain but the lakes are at their most vivid. Avoid Chinese National Day (Oct 1-7) — daily visitors can hit 50,000+.
  • Buy at the gate with passport, or pre-buy via the Jiuzhaigou Smart Tour mini-program in Alipay (search 九寨沟). Trip.com also sells English-language tickets. Same price for foreigners as Chinese citizens — no surcharge. The mandatory sightseeing bus ticket is sold separately at the gate; you cannot walk the main road.
  • Yes. The Five-Flower Lake (五花海) is accessible directly from the Rize Valley bus route — the bus stop is a 50-meter walk from the viewing platform. It is the most-photographed spot in the park. The most famous shot is from the elevated boardwalk on the north side, mid-morning, when the sun is overhead and the lake bottom is fully lit.
  • Yes for ages 5+. The sightseeing buses eliminate the long walks. The boardwalks around each lake are paved and stroller-friendly. The main concerns are the altitude (2,000-3,100m) and the long drive to reach the park (8-10 hours from Chengdu). For very young children, plan to descend to lower altitude (Jiuzhaigou town, 1,400m) to sleep.
  • Yes. The park is open 7:00 AM - 6:00 PM daily, year-round. Winter (Dec-Feb) has snow and the buses still run. Some lakes freeze over in deep winter but the waterfalls keep flowing. Note: the park was closed for 4 years after the 2017 earthquake, partially reopened 2018, and fully reopened in 2021 with a strict daily visitor cap of 41,000.
  • The valley floor is at 2,000m; the highest points (Long Lake) reach 3,100m. Mild altitude symptoms (headache, fatigue, shortness of breath) are common on day 1, especially coming directly from Chengdu (500m). Plan to take it easy on day 1, drink 3-4L of water, and avoid alcohol. Diamox (acetazolamide) is available at Chengdu pharmacies without prescription if you are prone to altitude issues.
