Huangshan for foreigners

Yellow Mountain's twisted pines, sea of clouds, and the UNESCO peaks that inspired a thousand Chinese paintings.

Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) is a 1,200-sq-km mountain range in southern Anhui province, 500 km southwest of Shanghai. The mountain has been celebrated in Chinese art for over 1,000 years โ€” the iconic twisted pines growing from granite cliffs and the rolling 'sea of clouds' below the peaks are a fixture of Chinese landscape painting. UNESCO World Heritage since 1990 (both for natural beauty and cultural significance). The mountain has 5 main scenic areas: the North Sea (ๅŒ—ๆตท, most visited), the West Sea (่ฅฟๆตท, grand canyon), the Sky Sea (ๅคฉๆตท, central), the Jade Screen (็މๅฑ, in front of the famous Guest-Greeting Pine), and the Cloud Valley Temple (ไบ‘่ฐทๅฏบ, eastern entrance). Most visitors stay 1-2 nights on the summit to catch both sunrise and sunset. The foot of the mountain has the ancient Huizhou villages of Hongcun and Xidi, both UNESCO-listed.

When to visit Huangshan

April-May and September-November. Avoid Chinese National Day (Oct 1-7) and weekends. Winter (Dec-Feb) is cold (-10ยฐC) and snowy but spectacular โ€” frosted pines and fewer crowds. The sea of clouds is most common in autumn and after rain.
