Beijing 2-Day Layover: Max China, Min Time
A tested 2-day Beijing itinerary for a long layover: Forbidden City highlights, Mutianyu Great Wall, Peking duck, and a Hutong night walk. With PVG/PEK airport transfer times and 240h visa-free rules.
A 2-day Beijing layover is the right amount of time to see the 4 things that make a China trip feel like a China trip: the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, a Peking duck, and a hutong at night. The other 50 things in Beijing are nice, but they are not why you came.
This itinerary is built for the time-pressured traveler — a São Paulo banker with a 36-hour stopover on the way to Tokyo, a London consultant between meetings, a Berlin teacher with a 2-day gap between teaching contracts. The math: 2 days, 1 person, ¥2,500–3,500 ($350–490); 2 people, ¥4,000–5,500 ($560–770). The total time from deplaning to re-boarding is 48 hours, with 6 hours of buffer for both airport transfers.
The 240-hour visa-free transit covers most non-visa-free nationalities for a 10-day transit; Brazilian, Argentine, and Chilean passport holders get the 30-day visa-free unilateral entry (no transit ticket required) and can stop in Beijing indefinitely within the 30-day window. Most other passport holders qualify for 240h if the route is home country → Beijing → third country (not home → Beijing → home).
Visa and entry rules for a 2-day Beijing stop
Three options, depending on your passport:
Option 1: 30-day visa-free unilateral entry (50+ nationalities)
Passports covered: Brazilian, Argentine, Chilean, Indonesian, Thai, Malaysian, Singaporean, UAE, Qatari, Saudi, most LATAM and ASEAN countries. Duration: up to 30 days. Requirement: passport valid 6+ months. No onward ticket required.
For a Brazilian on a São Paulo → Beijing → São Paulo trip, this is the right option. No transit ticket, no third country, no embassy visit. Just bring your passport.
Option 2: 240-hour visa-free transit (57 nationalities)
Passports covered: US, UK, Canadian, Australian, German, French, Italian, Spanish, most EU countries, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, most major economies. Duration: up to 240 hours (10 days). Requirement: passport valid 6+ months, confirmed onward ticket to a third country, entry through one of the approved entry ports (PEK, PKX, PVG, SHA, SHA-Xujiahui, all major airports).
The critical rule: the route must be home country → China → third country. USA → Beijing → USA does NOT qualify. USA → Beijing → Tokyo (or any other third country) DOES qualify.
For a 2-day Beijing stop, the 240h is overkill (you need a third-country flight, but you only use 2 of the 240 hours), but it is the rule that applies if you are a US/UK/EU passport holder on a stopover.
Option 3: L-visa (for stays over 30 days or non-qualifying passports)
For passport holders who don’t qualify for either of the above. £130 (UK), $140 (US), €125 (EU), 4 working days, no flight booking required as of January 2024. See our L-visa guide.
For most readers of this article, Option 1 or 2 applies. See the 30-day visa-free guide and the 240-hour visa-free guide for full details.
Getting from the airport to the hotel
From Beijing Capital (PEK) — the closer airport
- Airport Express train (¥25, 30 min to Dongzhimen, runs 6:20 AM–10:00 PM): the cheapest, fastest, and most reliable. From Dongzhimen, take a DiDi (¥30–50, 15 min) to your hotel.
- DiDi directly (¥120–180, 50–80 min depending on traffic): the most convenient if you have luggage. PEK DiDi pickup is at the official taxi/DiDi stand outside Arrivals.
- Hotel transfer (¥200–400, 30–50 min): pre-bookable through Trip.com, the most senior-friendly option.
From Beijing Daxing (PKX) — the newer airport
- Daxing Airport Express (¥35, 40 min to Caoqiao): the new subway line, 160 km/h.
- DiDi directly (¥200–280, 60–80 min): the airport is 46 km south of the city, the drive is a long motorway.
- Hotel transfer (¥350–500, 50–70 min): the senior default.
The honest answer for a 2-day stop: take the airport express and a DiDi (¥55–75 total). Faster, cheaper, no waiting for the hotel driver.
If you have a 9 PM – 6 AM arrival or departure, the airport express is closed. The DiDi is the only option, and the surge is real (¥200+).
Day 1: Forbidden City, Jingshan, hutong night
8:00 AM — Hotel breakfast, Alipay setup, tickets
Most hotels have breakfast from 7:00 AM. Eat a real breakfast — today is the longest day. While eating, set up Alipay (see our Alipay guide) and buy your Forbidden City ticket on the official WeChat mini-program (¥60 / $8.50, ID/passport required, dated entry slot).
9:00 AM — Forbidden City
Arrive at the Meridian Gate (south entrance) by 9:00 AM. The line at 9 AM is 15–20 min; the line at 11 AM is 60+ min. The Forbidden City opens at 8:30 AM (last entry 3:30 PM in winter, 4:00 PM in summer) and is closed Mondays. Allow 2.5–3 hours.
The 2-hour route (the 1-day layover default): enter at the south, walk the central axis through the Hall of Supreme Harmony, Hall of Preserving Harmony, Palace of Heavenly Purity, then exit at the north gate. Skip the Treasure Gallery and the west/east wings — they are nice but they will eat 90 min and you have a hutong to walk.
12:00 PM — Jingshan Park
Cross the street to Jingshan Park (¥2 / $0.30). The hill behind the Forbidden City is the highest point in central Beijing. Climb to the top (10 min, 108 steps) for the iconic Forbidden City rooftop photo. Skip the climb if your knees are not in shape; the park is still worth the ¥2 for the perspective.
12:45 PM — Lunch at Quanjude or Da Dong
Walk south 10 min to the Wangfujing area. Quanjude (全聚德, 1864 original) or Da Dong (大董, modern favorite with locals) for Peking duck. A whole duck is ¥300–500 ($42–70), feeds 2 people. For a solo traveler, the half-duck option is ¥180–250 ($25–35). The Quanjude is more touristy; Da Dong is better. Da Dong’s 5-star branch is at 1st floor, Jinbao Place, 88 Jinbao Street (¥30 DiDi from the Forbidden City).
Budget alternative: skip the duck and grab jianbing (¥10), baozi (¥8), and a yogurt drink (¥5) at the Wangfujing snack street. The street is touristy but the food is honest.
2:00 PM — Hotel check-in, rest, or hutong walk
If you arrived at the hotel early and your room is ready: check in, take a 30-min power nap, change clothes. If your room isn’t ready: leave your bags and walk.
Optional afternoon add-on (if you have energy):
- Temple of Heaven (¥35 / $5, 15 min DiDi) — 90 min visit, the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is the iconic Beijing skyline image. Closes at 6 PM (5 PM in winter).
- National Museum of China (free, 20 min DiDi) — 2 hours if you have a museum itch, the bronze and ceramic galleries are the highlights. Closed Mondays.
5:00 PM — Hutong rickshaw tour
Book a rickshaw tour of the hutongs for sunset. ¥150–200 ($21–28) per person for 1.5 hours, pick up at any hutong intersection near the Bell Tower. The standard route: Bell Tower → Yandai Xiejie (an old tobacco-pipe alley) → Nanluoguxiang (the most famous hutong, now half-boutique, half-street-food). The rickshaw driver is also the guide.
Self-guided alternative: skip the rickshaw and walk the 1.5 km from the Bell Tower to Nanluoguxiang in 30 min. The walk is flat, the hutongs are photogenic, and the street food at the end is the same as the rickshaw route.
7:00 PM — Dinner
For solo travelers: Din Tai Fung (鼎泰豐) at Wangfujing for xiaolongbao, ¥100–150 ($14–21) per person, predictable and good.
For couples: King’s Joy (京兆尹, 雍和宫) for vegetarian tasting menu, ¥580 / $81 per person, Michelin 3-star. Book 3–5 days ahead through Trip.com or the concierge.
For groups: TRB (前海, 什刹海) for French cuisine in a converted Ming-dynasty temple, ¥800 / $112 per person, Tasting Menu.
8:30 PM — Beijing night option
If energy: Wangfujing Snack Street for the post-dinner candied hawthorn (¥10) and the visual experience of the exotic skewers (scorpion, starfish, seahorse, if you dare).
If rest: back to the hotel. Day 2 is the Great Wall.
Day 2: Mutianyu Great Wall + Peking duck
6:00 AM — Wake, breakfast, driver pickup
The day starts early because Mutianyu is 1.5 hours north. The driver should pick you up at the hotel by 6:30–7:00 AM to be at the Wall by 8:30 AM (the Wall opens 7:30 AM in summer, 8:00 AM in winter).
Pre-book the driver through your hotel concierge or Trip.com the day before. A full-day private driver with a 7-seat minivan is ¥800–1,000 ($112–140) for 8 hours. The driver waits at the Wall for the 2.5–3 hours you are on the Wall. Pay in cash or Alipay at the end of the day.
Budget alternative: the MuBus (慕巴士) from Wangfujing runs 7:30 AM, returns 5:30 PM, ¥80 ($11) per person. It’s a 2-hour-each-way bus, but it works. The bus fills up on weekends and holidays — book 3+ days ahead through the official WeChat mini-program.
8:30 AM — Arrive Mutianyu
The driver drops you at the visitor center. Buy the entry ticket (¥40 / $5.50) and the round-trip enclosed cable car (¥100 / $14 each way, ¥200 / $28 total) at the visitor center. The cable car is the senior/tired-traveler default — it puts you on the Wall in 5 min without the 30-min climb.
The Wall is less crowded at 8:30 AM than at 11 AM. Walk east from Tower 14 (the cable car exit) to Tower 20 — 2 km of flat or gently rolling restored path, 30 min at a slow pace. The view is the iconic Wall-on-the-Mountains shot. Return the same way and ride the cable car down.
Optional add-on (only if energy and time): the toboggan down (¥100 / $14) from Tower 6. The toboggan is fun, but it adds 30 min to the Wall experience.
12:00 PM — Return to Beijing
The driver picks you up at 12:00 PM. Back in central Beijing by 1:30 PM. The driver can drop you at the hotel for a 1-hour rest, or directly at the lunch restaurant.
1:30 PM — Lunch (Peking duck if you didn’t do it Day 1)
Quanjude (前门店, 30 Qianmen Street) or Da Dong (1st floor, Jinbao Place, 88 Jinbao Street). Half-duck for solo, whole duck for two. The duck takes 20 min to carve, allow 90 min for the meal.
Da Dong is consistently rated the better duck and the more local experience. The duck is carved tableside, the wrap-making is on the house, and the side dishes (sugar, scallion, cucumber, sweet bean sauce) are the right size for a 2-person table. ¥300–500 ($42–70) for a whole duck for 2.
3:30 PM — Optional afternoon add-on
If you have time before the airport: Temple of Heaven (¥35 / $5, 15 min DiDi) for the iconic Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests photo. 1 hour visit. Or Nanluoguxiang for last-minute souvenir shopping (20 min DiDi to the hutong, 1 hour walk).
If you have an evening flight: skip the add-on and go to the hotel to rest, shower, and pack. The hotel can hold your bags from check-out to evening.
6:00 PM — Airport transfer
DiDi from Wangfujing / Forbidden City to PEK (¥120–180, 50–80 min) or PKX (¥200–280, 60–80 min). Leave 3 hours before an international flight. If you have a 9 PM flight, leave the hotel by 5:30 PM. The DiDi surge from 5:30–7:30 PM can be 2x the normal price; the airport express is the safer bet if your hotel is on Line 2 or Line 13.
The 48-hour tight version (no Peking duck, no Jingshan)
If you have under 40 hours and want the most efficient 2-day Beijing:
| Day | Time | Activity |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 8:00 AM | Arrive PEK, hotel check-in, drop bags |
| 1 | 9:00 AM | Forbidden City (2.5 hours, central axis only) |
| 1 | 12:00 PM | Lunch near the hotel (not Peking duck) |
| 1 | 2:00 PM | Hutong walk (Bell Tower → Nanluoguxiang, 1.5 hours) |
| 1 | 5:00 PM | Hotel rest |
| 1 | 7:00 PM | Dinner (Din Tai Fung or hotel restaurant) |
| 2 | 7:00 AM | Driver to Mutianyu Great Wall (arrive 8:30 AM) |
| 2 | 9:00 AM | On the Wall (cable car up, 1-hour walk, cable car down) |
| 2 | 12:00 PM | Driver back to hotel |
| 2 | 2:00 PM | Pack, hotel late checkout, Peking duck takeout from Da Dong (¥180 half duck, 30 min to wrap) |
| 2 | 4:00 PM | DiDi to airport |
| 2 | 7:00 PM | International flight departure |
The tight version still hits the 4 icons: Forbidden City, Great Wall, hutong, and Peking duck. The trade-off is no Jingshan Park and no Peking duck sit-down experience.
Where to stay (within 2 km of Tiananmen)
For a 2-day stop, the hotel matters less than the location. The 3 tiers:
Budget (under $50/night)
- Beijing Downtown Hostel (¥200 / $28, near Dengshikou metro): dorm-style, central, English-speaking staff, free luggage storage. The honest answer for a 1-night budget stop.
Mid (¥600–1,200 / $84–168)
- Hotel Cote Cour (¥600 / $95, Dongcheng, near Dengshikou metro): the most recommended mid-tier in central Beijing. 4-star equivalent, English-speaking staff, ground-floor rooms available, walk-in shower, breakfast included (¥60 extra). 5-min walk to Wangfujing.
- Beijing Double Happiness Hotel (¥800 / $112, Dongcheng, hutong location): restored courtyard hotel with 2 km of Tiananmen.
- Holiday Inn Beijing Forbidden City (¥900 / $126, Wangfujing): international chain consistency, ground-floor room available, English concierge.
Luxury (¥2,000+ / $280+)
- The Peninsula Beijing (¥2,000 / $280, Wangfujing): the senior default. Full concierge, walk-in shower, breakfast included, pre-bookable private driver, the kind of staff that fixes problems before you notice them.
- Rosewood Beijing (¥2,400 / $336, Chaoyang CBD): the design pick, modern art on every floor, walk-in shower, ground-floor room.
- Mandarin Oriental Wangfujing (¥2,800 / $392, Wangfujing): the newest luxury hotel, opened 2024, walk-in shower, ground-floor, English concierge.
The right pick for a 2-day stop: Hotel Cote Cour (¥600, mid-tier) for most travelers, The Peninsula (¥2,000) if you want the concierge team to handle the Wall day, Mutianyu driver, and airport transfer. The Peninsula concierge will also pre-book the Forbidden City ticket and the Peking duck reservation — it’s a 2-day trip in autopilot.
Cost breakdown (1 person, 2 days, mid-tier)
| Item | Per person |
|---|---|
| Hotel (1 night, Hotel Cote Cour) | ¥600 ($84) |
| Forbidden City ticket | ¥60 ($8.50) |
| Mutianyu entry + cable car | ¥240 ($34) |
| Private driver (full day, Mutianyu) | ¥900 ($126) |
| Peking duck (half duck) | ¥200 ($28) |
| Other food (3 meals, 1 snack) | ¥250 ($35) |
| Local transport (DiDi 4 trips + airport express) | ¥200 ($28) |
| Alipay/WeChat top-up | ¥500 ($70) |
| Total | ¥2,950 ($413) |
For 2 people: ¥4,200 ($588), or ¥5,500 ($770) with a 1-night Peninsula instead of Hotel Cote Cour. For 4 people: ¥6,500 ($910), since the driver and Peking duck scale.
Luggage and storage
- PEK left-luggage: at Terminal 3 Arrivals, 24-hour, ¥20–30 ($3–4) per piece per day. Open 24/7.
- PKX left-luggage: at the B1 level of the terminal, ¥20–30 per piece per day. Open 24/7.
- Hotel left-luggage: all 3-star and above hotels hold bags after check-out for free. A 2-day stop is short enough that you can leave bags at the hotel from arrival to departure if your flight times don’t match check-in/check-out.
Transiting onward (3+ days stopover)
If you have a 3+ day Beijing stop and want to add a second city, the easiest extensions are:
- Beijing → Shanghai (HSR, 4h 30m, ¥553 / $78 second class, every 15 min all day): the most common extension. Add 2 days in Shanghai for The Bund, Yu Garden, and the Huangpu River.
- Beijing → Xi’an (HSR, 4h 30m, ¥623 / $87 second class, every 20–30 min): add 2 days for the Terracotta Warriors and the City Wall. Xi’an has direct HSR to Shanghai (6h, ¥669 / $94) if you want to chain the three cities.
- Beijing → Hong Kong (HSR + transfer, 8h 30m, ¥1,089 / $153 second class): a long day, but the Beijing → Hong Kong HSR opened 2018 and is a scenic ride.
For a 3-day Beijing stop, the right move is Beijing 2 days + 1 day in Tianjin (HSR 30 min, ¥55 / $8, an easy day trip with colonial architecture, the Porcelain House, and the Tianjin Eye). For a 4-day stop, add Shanghai.

Step by step
-
Confirm visa-free eligibility
Check your passport against the 240-hour transit list (US, UK, EU, etc.) or 30-day unilateral entry list (Brazil, Argentina, Chile, etc.). For 240h, you need a confirmed onward ticket to a third country. 57+ nationalities qualify; passport must be valid 6+ months.
-
Arrive and transfer to hotel
From PEK take Airport Express (¥25 / $3.50) + DiDi (¥30-50), or from PKX take Daxing Express (¥35) + DiDi. Total transfer 30-80 min, ¥55-75 ($8-11) per person.
-
Day 1: Forbidden City, Jingshan, hutongs
Enter the Forbidden City by 9 AM via Meridian Gate (¥60 / $8.50, buy online via WeChat). Cross to Jingshan Park (¥2 / $0.30) for the iconic roofline view. End with a hutong rickshaw tour or self-guided Bell Tower to Nanluoguxiang walk (1.5 hr, ¥150-200 / $21-28).
-
Day 2: Mutianyu Great Wall + Peking duck
Pre-book a private driver (¥800-1,000 / $112-140 for 8 hr) or take MuBus from Wangfujing (¥80 / $11 round-trip, 7:30 AM departure). Take the cable car up (¥100 / $14), walk east to Tower 20 (1.5 hr), return for Peking duck at Da Dong (half-duck ¥180-250 / $25-35).
-
Departure to airport
DiDi to PEK (¥120-180, 50-80 min) or PKX (¥200-280, 60-80 min). Leave 3 hours before an international flight. Surge from 5:30-7:30 PM can double the price; airport express is the safer bet if your hotel is on Line 2 or 13.
FAQ
-
Do I need a visa for a 2-day Beijing layover?
It depends on your passport. Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and 47 other countries get 30-day visa-free unilateral entry - just bring your passport. US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, and 50+ other countries qualify for 240-hour visa-free transit if you have a confirmed onward ticket to a third country (not home country). If neither applies, apply for an L-visa (US $140, EU EUR 125, UK GBP 130, 4 working days). -
Which Beijing airport is closer to the city for a 2-day stop?
PEK (Capital) is closer - 30 min to downtown by Airport Express (¥25). PKX (Daxing) is 46 km south, 40 min by Daxing Express (¥35) to Caoqiao then a metro transfer. If your international connection forces PKX, build in 90 min of transfer time and budget ¥200-280 ($28-39) for a DiDi. -
Can I see the Great Wall in one day from Beijing?
Yes. Mutianyu is 1.5 hours north of the city. The MuBus from Wangfujing departs 7:30 AM and returns 5:30 PM (¥80 / $11 round-trip, book via WeChat). The Wall itself takes 2-3 hours: cable car up, walk east to Tower 20, cable car or toboggan down. Private drivers (¥800-1,000 / $112-140 for 8 hr) are more flexible and worth it for groups of 3-4.
