Lijiang Old Town at early morning in Yunnan, China, traditional Naxi architecture along a stone-paved canal

Honeymoon in Lijiang: 5-6 Romantic Days in Yunnan (2026 Guide)

Lijiang honeymoon guide for 2026: UNESCO 800-year old town + Jade Dragon Snow Mountain at 4,500m + Amandayan luxury hotel + 5-6 day itinerary. Visa-free entry, best months, and how to combine with Shanghai, Shangri-La, or Dali.

By Harris Wang, Founder & Editorial Lead

If you want a honeymoon that feels like stepping back 800 years — cobblestone alleys, snow-capped mountains in the distance, traditional courtyard hotels, and slow mornings walking a UNESCO old town before the day-trippers arrive — fly to Lijiang. Lijiang (丽江) is the most romantic ancient-town honeymoon in China, anchored by the 800-year-old Naxi old town (UNESCO, free entry) and the dramatic Jade Dragon Snow Mountain at 4,500m. The only Aman in Yunnan (Amandayan, $280/night) is the gold standard for the area, and the experience is half the price of an equivalent Aman in Bhutan or Bali.

For the full 10-day multi-city China honeymoon route, see our China Honeymoon Itinerary. For a direct Lijiang 5-day plan, use our custom day-by-day builder.

Why Lijiang is the most romantic ancient-town honeymoon in China

Three reasons it beats every other cultural-heritage option in China:

  1. The old town is the most walkable in the country. 800 years of Naxi (纳西) architecture, 5 km of stone-paved alleys, dozens of stone bridges over canals that reflect the old wooden houses — and almost all of it flat. You’ll walk 8-12 km a day without thinking about it. The old town is free to enter and free to wander; you only pay for the specific Naxi cultural museums and the Black Dragon Pool.
  2. The mountain backdrop is unreal. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山) at 5,596m peak, the cable car reaches 4,506m, and on clear mornings the snow-capped summit is visible from the old town alleys 25 km away. This is the only major Chinese city with both a 800-year-old town and a permanent snow line within sight. No other China destination offers that combination.
  3. The Aman is the right price. Amandayan, the only Aman in Yunnan, is $280/night for a courtyard suite — that’s 60-70% less than the equivalent Aman in Bali, Bhutan, or Tokyo, with a 25m heated pool, an Aman Spa, and a service standard that matches Aman everywhere. For a honeymoon, the Aman is the differentiator.

The honest trade-offs: altitude (2,400m in the old town means 1-2 days of acclimatization for some couples), English is limited outside the Amandayan/InterContinental/old town boutique hotels, and the old town becomes a tourist crush between 10 AM and 6 PM. The fix for the third one: wake up at 6:30 AM and walk the old town in 90 minutes of empty alleys before the day-trippers from Kunming arrive. This is what makes Lijiang feel like the real 800-year-old town and not a theme park.

Visa-free entry for Lijiang

Lijiang is in Yunnan province, not Hainan, so the 144-country Hainan policy does NOT apply. You need either:

1. Mainland China 30-day visa-free (50+ countries: UK, Korea, Japan, most of EU, Australia, NZ, etc.). Just enter China at any airport (Beijing, Shanghai, Kunming, etc.) and the standard 30-day visa-free applies across the country including Lijiang. This is the easiest path for the most passports.

2. L-visa for non-visa-free countries (US, Canada, and ~80 other countries not on the 30-day list). Apply at a Chinese consulate or via a visa service ($130-200, 4-day processing). For a 6-day Lijiang-only honeymoon, this is overkill — either fly via Hong Kong and use the 144-country Hainan policy for a Sanya alternative, or add the Lijiang leg to a longer multi-city China trip on a single L-visa.

Practical booking note: the Amandayan and InterContinental both need a confirmed hotel reservation and return flight when you check in to the visa-free policy. Print your Amandayan confirmation PDF (with name in English + Chinese, address, phone) and your return flight ticket. The Lijiang airport immigration officer may ask, and printing saves 5-10 minutes of fumbling with offline Alipay.

Practical altitude note: the old town is at 2,400m, the cable car upper station at 4,506m. Spend 1-2 nights at 2,400m old-town altitude before the cable car. Most altitude-related issues hit honeymooners who push too hard on Day 1.

When to go: best months + altitude considerations

MonthOld town (°C)Cable car (°C)Verdict
Apr12-20-2 to 8Best overall — wildflowers, low humidity, cable car reliably open
May15-220-10Best for honeymoons — warm but not hot, perfect old-town walking weather
Jun17-244-13Good but start of rainy season (afternoon thunderstorms)
Jul18-246-13Rainy season peaks — afternoon storms reduce mountain visibility
Aug18-235-12Same as July
Sep16-222-10Improves after mid-month, autumn foliage starts
Oct13-20-2 to 8Excellent — crystal-clear mountain visibility, autumn foliage, fewer tourists than spring
Nov8-15-8 to 0Excellent for honeymoons, but cable car station can close if first snow
Dec4-12-15 to -3Old town is cold but doable; cable car station closed in heavy snow
Jan-Feb0-8-20 to -10Avoid — bitter cold, snow closes the upper cable car, no upside
Mar8-15-5 to 3Shoulder month, sometimes good deals at Amandayan

Best for honeymooners: mid-April to mid-May or mid-October to mid-November. Book Amandayan 2-3 months ahead for these windows.

Where to stay (by tier and area)

The old town is small and walkable — the four best hotel areas are all within 5 minutes of each other.

Amandayan ($280/night) — the gold standard

35 suites in a 5-acre walled Naxi courtyard compound, 10 minutes walk from the heart of the old town but feels a world away. Three on-site restaurants, 25m heated outdoor pool with snow-mountain views, Aman Spa (the 90-minute couple’s treatment in a private courtyard suite is the best reason to come), and the most attentive service in Yunnan. The courtyard suites facing the snow mountain are the most romantic — book 2-3 months ahead.

Lijiang Old Town Inn ($56/night) — the boutique pick

12 rooms in a restored Naxi courtyard house, 5 minutes walk from the heart of the old town, walkable to Black Dragon Pool. No pool or spa but the rooftop breakfast with mountain views is unforgettable, the courtyard is the most Instagram-friendly in Lijiang, and the owner will arrange any private driver or guide you need. Best for couples on a budget who want character.

InterContinental Lijiang Ancient Town Resort ($180/night) — the 5-star reliable

The only fully accessible 5-star in the old town, with all the standard InterContinental amenities (large rooms, indoor pool, international breakfast buffet, kids-club if you ever bring a baby). The lobby bar with mountain views is the romantic highlight — book the high-tea service in the afternoon. Best for couples who want a familiar international chain with character.

Banyan Tree Lijiang (closed, FYI)

Banyan Tree Lijiang was the other luxury option, but it closed in 2023. The Amandayan now has the luxury crown uncontested.

Our pick for a honeymoon: 3 nights Amandayan + 2 nights Lijiang Old Town Inn. Two completely different moods (Aman luxury vs. local courtyard character), both walkable to the old town. The Aman spa + the Old Town Inn rooftop breakfast is the perfect pacing.

Romantic things to do in Lijiang

1. Old town walk at sunrise (Day 1, 6:30 AM)

Wake at 6:15 AM, walk 90 minutes through the old town alleys, the stone bridges, and the canal-side Naxi houses. At 6:30 AM, almost no one is out — the noodle shops haven’t opened, the day-trippers haven’t arrived from Kunming, and the alleys are yours. End at the Big Water Wheel (大水车) at the north end of the old town, where you can see Jade Dragon Snow Mountain on clear mornings. Bring a camera, bring a thermos of hot water, and walk slow.

2. Black Dragon Pool (Day 1, 7:30 AM)

5 minutes walk north of the old town, the Black Dragon Pool (黑龙潭, ¥60 entry) is the most photographed spot in Lijiang — a small traditional pavilion reflected in the still dark water, with Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in the background. The morning light hits the pool around 7:30 AM. Allow 1 hour. The local Naxi elder musicians often play traditional instruments at the pool entrance — give a ¥20 tip for a 10-minute personal performance.

3. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain day trip (Day 2, 8 AM - 5 PM)

A 30-minute drive from the old town, the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山, ¥100 entry + ¥60 cable car) is the main day trip. The cable car to 4,506m is the highlight — the views from the upper station span 360° across the Yunnan mountains. Important: spend 1-2 days at the old-town 2,400m altitude before attempting the 4,506m cable car, or you’ll get altitude headache/mild altitude sickness. The upper station has oxygen cans for purchase (¥30) and the Amandayan concierge will give you a free portable oxygen bottle if you ask. The 3 PM “Impression Lijiang” outdoor show (¥280) is the open-air Zhang Yimou-directed performance with 500 Naxi performers in the valley — spectacular if you have the energy, skip if you don’t.

4. Lashi Lake horse ride (Day 3, 9 AM - 1 PM)

A 30-minute drive from the old town, Lashi Lake (拉市海, ¥150-300 for a 2-hour guided horse ride including lunch) is the closest thing to the old Tea-Horse Road. The lake is at 2,500m elevation, the horse ride is on flat lakeside grassland, and the guides are all local Naxi families. Best for couples who like a half-day outdoor activity. Book through the Amandayan concierge (not via Trip.com) — they use a specific family that has been operating for 20 years.

5. Aman couple’s spa (Day 3, 2-5 PM)

The Amandayan’s 90-minute couple’s treatment in a private courtyard suite (¥1,800 for two) is the single most relaxing spa experience in Yunnan. Book at check-in for Day 3. The suite has its own private courtyard, hot tub, and the massage is delivered by Aman-trained Naxi therapists using local herbs. Allow 3 hours including the 30-minute herbal tea ceremony afterward.

6. Naxi music dinner (Day 3, 7:30 PM)

The old town has 5-6 small Naxi music restaurants, the most authentic being Xueyuan Restaurant (雪园餐厅) near the Big Water Wheel. The owner is a former Naxi music teacher, the food is Yunnan home cooking (try the Naxi-style grilled fish, ¥80; the yak cheese hot pot, ¥120 for two), and the live Naxi music starts at 7:30 PM and runs until 10 PM. Dinner for two with drinks: ¥350-500 total.

7. Shuhe Old Town sunset (Day 4, 5 PM)

A 15-minute drive from the Lijiang old town, Shuhe Old Town (束河古镇) is the quieter, smaller sister of Lijiang old town — 1,500 years old, far fewer tourists, more local Naxi life, and a beautiful sunset from the hilltop viewpoint at the south end. Walk 2 hours, dinner at one of the family-run courtyard restaurants. If you only have 3 days in Lijiang, skip this — the main old town has more substance.

Day 3: Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

8 AM departure with private driver. Cable car to 4,506m. Lighter option: stay at the lower 3,200m station if altitude-sensitive. Afternoon: “Impression Lijiang” show (or skip and rest). Return 5 PM. Light dinner at the Amandayan.

Day 4: Lashi Lake + transfer to Old Town Inn

How to get to Lijiang

From mainland China cities (all by air):

  • Kunming (KMG) → Lijiang (LJG): 1 hour, $80-120 one-way, 15+ daily direct flights (the most common routing)
  • Shanghai (PVG/SHA) → Lijiang (LJG): 3.5 hours, $180-280 one-way, 5-7 daily direct flights
  • Beijing (PEK) → Lijiang (LJG): 4 hours, $200-320 one-way, 4-5 daily direct flights
  • Guangzhou (CAN) → Lijiang (LJG): 2.5 hours, $150-250 one-way, 3-4 daily direct flights
  • Chengdu (CTU) → Lijiang (LJG): 1.5 hours, $120-180 one-way, 6+ daily direct flights (good if you’re adding Lijiang to a Sichuan/Panda trip)

From the airport to the old town: Amandayan offers free airport pickup if you book direct (request at booking). InterContinental offers paid pickup ($30-40). Lijiang Old Town Inn can arrange pickup via the owner’s driver ($30). Otherwise: metered airport taxi ($20-25, 40 minutes — confirm the meter is on before boarding). The airport unlicensed “taxi” touts quote ¥200 (5x the metered rate) — refuse firmly and walk to the official taxi rank.

Sample 6-day Lijiang honeymoon budget (mid-tier):

  • Hotels: 3 nights Amandayan ($280) + 2 nights Old Town Inn ($56) = $952
  • Flights: 2 round-trip tickets PVG ↔ LJG ($200 × 2 × 2) = $800
  • Food: 6 days × $50 for two = $300
  • Local transport: airport transfers + Lashi Lake driver = $200
  • Activities: Jade Dragon entry+cable (¥160 = $22) + Impression Lijiang (¥280 = $40) + Lashi Lake horse ride (¥300 = $42) + Black Dragon Pool (¥60 = $8) + Aman couple’s spa (¥1,800 = $250) = $362
  • Misc: $150
  • Total: $2,764 per couple for 6 days mid-tier (not counting international flights)

Luxury tier with 5 nights at Amandayan + daily couple’s spa + private Shangri-La 2-day add-on is $7,000-10,000 per couple. Budget tier with 4 nights at a 3-star old town inn + minimal paid activities is $1,500-2,000 per couple.

Connect to the rest of your China trip

Lijiang works as either a standalone honeymoon or the cultural bookend to a multi-city route. The most popular combinations:

  1. Kunming + Lijiang + Shanghai (3 + 4 + 4 = 11 days): 3 days Kunming (Stone Forest, Yunnan Museum), fly to Lijiang, 4 days old town + Jade Dragon, fly to Shanghai, 4 days Bund + French Concession + Zhujiajiao. The classic Yunnan + east coast China route.
  2. Lijiang + Shangri-La (4 + 3 = 7 days): 4 days Lijiang old town, 2-3 hour drive to Shangri-La, 3 days Songzanlin Monastery + Pudacuo National Park + Tibetan culture. The Yunnan’s two cultural highlights. Best for couples who want the full Tibetan borderland experience.
  3. Shanghai + Lijiang + Sanya (4 + 4 + 5 = 13 days): 4 days Shanghai (Bund + French Concession), fly to Lijiang, 4 days old town, fly to Sanya, 5 days beach. The complete honeymoon: cosmopolitan city + cultural ancient town + tropical beach. See the full 10-day China honeymoon itinerary for the cultural half.
  4. Chengdu + Lijiang (3 + 4 = 7 days): 3 days Chengdu (pandas + Sichuan food), fly to Lijiang, 4 days old town. The Sichuan + Yunnan pairing — pandas and ancient towns, noodles and Yunnan mushrooms.

For couples who want a pure cultural honeymoon with no beach, fly Kunming → Lijiang → Shanghai, 10 days, $4,000-7,000 per couple.

Step by step

  1. Book Amandayan 2-3 months ahead for May or October-November

Reserve a courtyard suite at Amandayan via direct booking (best-rate guarantee + free airport pickup) or Trip.com. For mid-April to mid-May or mid-October to mid-November windows, book 2-3 months ahead. Total Amandayan cost: $280/night. The 800-year-old Lijiang old town is at 2,400m — spend 1-2 nights there before the 4,506m cable car.

  2. Fly into Lijiang Sanyi International Airport (LJG)

Direct flights from Kunming (1 hour, $80-120, 15+ daily), Shanghai (3.5h, $180-280), Beijing (4h, $200-320), Chengdu (1.5h, $120-180), or Guangzhou (2.5h, $150-250). Take the Amandayan free airport pickup (book direct) or metered airport taxi ($20-25, 40 min). Do NOT take the unlicensed touts at arrivals — they quote 5x the metered rate.

  3. Acclimatize at old-town altitude (2,400m) for 24-48 hours

Walk the 800-year-old Naxi old town alleys (free, 5 km of stone-paved alleys) and visit Black Dragon Pool (¥60, sunrise 7:30 AM for the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain backdrop). Drink 2-3x normal water intake. Consider a half-dose of 红景天 (Hong Jing Tian) for 3 days before arrival. Most altitude-related issues hit on Day 2 if you push too hard on Day 1.

  4. Take the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain cable car to 4,506m

¥100 entry + ¥60 cable car, 30 min drive from the old town. The upper station is at 4,506m — only attempt on Day 2 or 3 after old-town acclimatization. The Amandayan concierge provides a free portable oxygen bottle. Optional 3 PM 'Impression Lijiang' Zhang Yimou show (¥280) is a 500-performer open-air spectacle. Allow 8 AM to 5 PM for the day trip.

  5. Add an Aman couple's spa and 2 nights at Lijiang Old Town Inn

Book the Amandayan 90-minute couple's treatment in a private courtyard suite (¥1,800 for two) for Day 3 — the most relaxing spa experience in Yunnan. Then transfer to Lijiang Old Town Inn ($56/night) for 2 more nights: restored Naxi courtyard, rooftop breakfast with mountain views, walkable to Shuhe Old Town (15 min by taxi).

FAQ

  • Yes — Lijiang is the most romantic ancient-town honeymoon in China. The case is straightforward: 800-year-old Naxi old town (UNESCO, free entry, walk the cobblestone alleys and canals before 9 AM to avoid the day-trippers), Jade Dragon Snow Mountain at 4,500m elevation (the most dramatic accessible snow line in southern China, ¥100 entry + ¥60 cable car), and the only Aman in Yunnan — Amandayan, $280/night, the gold standard for Lijiang honeymoons with traditional Naxi courtyard architecture and views to the snow mountain. The trade-offs: altitude (2,400m in the old town, 4,500m at the cable car station) makes some honeymooners light-headed for the first day, English is limited outside the 4-5 star hotels, and the old town becomes a tourist crush between 10 AM and 6 PM. For couples who want slow mornings, cobblestone alleys, mountain views, and an Aman at 1/3 the price of an Aman in Bhutan or Bhutan, Lijiang is the clear China winner.
  • Yes, Lijiang is one of the safest tourist cities in Yunnan. Violent crime against tourists is rare; the main risks are altitude-related (headache, light-headedness, shortness of breath for the first 24-48 hours), petty pickpocketing in the old town during peak hours, and a few persistent taxi scams (drivers quoting 5x the metered rate from the airport). Practical safety notes for honeymooners: spend the first 24 hours at 2,400m old-town altitude before attempting the 4,500m Jade Dragon cable car (most altitude-related issues hit on Day 2 if you push too hard on Day 1), drink 2-3x your normal water intake, and consider taking a half-dose of the local herb **Hong Jing Tian (红景天)** for 3 days before arrival (the Amandayan will prepare it on request). The Lijiang Central Hospital is 5 km from the old town and has an international clinic; for serious medical issues, the Kunming hospitals (2-hour drive) are world-class — see our full [Sick in China guide](/articles/sick-in-china-foreigners-guide/) for the country-wide medical network.
  • **April-May and October-November are the two windows for a Lijiang honeymoon.** April-May: 15-22°C, low humidity, wildflowers in the valleys, the most comfortable old-town walking weather of the year, and the cable car to Jade Dragon's 4,500m summit station is open (sometimes closed for snow in early April). October-November: 12-20°C, crystal-clear mountain visibility (you can see Jade Dragon from the old town on most mornings), autumn foliage, fewer tourists than spring, and the same clear cable car access. **Avoid**: late December to February (0-8°C, the old town alleys are bitterly cold, snow closes the upper cable car station, and rooms at Amandayan are heated but the courtyards are not). July-August is the rainy season (afternoon thunderstorms reduce mountain visibility; not dangerous but a half-day wasted). Chinese National Day (Oct 1-7) and Spring Festival (mid-Feb) are the worst weeks — hotel prices double and the old town has 50,000+ daily visitors. For a honeymoon, target **mid-April to mid-May** or **mid-October to mid-November**.
  • **Fly to Lijiang Sanyi International Airport (LJG)**. There are no high-speed rail options to Lijiang (the Yunnan mountains make it impossible). From major Chinese cities: Beijing (4 hours, $200-320 one-way, 4-5 daily direct flights), Shanghai (3.5 hours, $180-280 one-way, 5-7 daily direct flights), Guangzhou (2.5 hours, $150-250 one-way, 3-4 daily direct flights), Kunming (1 hour, $80-120 one-way, 15+ daily direct flights — the most common routing). From international gateways: Bangkok (4 hours, 1-2 weekly direct flights), Singapore (5 hours, 1-2 weekly), and seasonal charters from Tokyo/Seoul in summer. The Lijiang airport is 30 km from the old town — pre-book hotel transfer (Amandayan offers free pickup if you book direct, $30-40 if via Trip.com) or take the metered airport taxi ($20-25, 40 minutes). **Do not take the unlicensed touts** at arrivals — they quote 5x the metered rate.
  • **Three tiers, three different moods. Pick by what you value most.** (1) **Amandayan, $280/night** — the only Aman in Yunnan, the gold standard for Lijiang honeymoons. Traditional Naxi courtyard architecture (35 suites in a 5-acre walled compound), 3 on-site restaurants including a Tibetan hot-pot dinner, a 25m heated outdoor pool with views to Jade Dragon, and the most attentive English-fluent concierge team in Yunnan. The Aman Spa is the best reason to come: 90-minute couple's treatment in a private courtyard suite (¥1,800 for two). Book 2-3 months ahead for the courtyard suites that face the snow mountain. (2) **Lijiang Old Town Inn, $56/night** — the most atmospheric boutique option. Restored Naxi courtyard house with 12 rooms, walkable to everything in the old town, no pool or spa but the rooftop breakfast with mountain views is unforgettable. Best for couples on a budget who still want character. (3) **InterContinental Lijiang Ancient Town Resort, $180/night** — the best 5-star option that's not Aman. Large rooms, indoor pool, the only fully accessible room-style in the old town, kids-club (if you ever bring a baby), and the best international breakfast buffet in Lijiang. Best for couples who want a familiar international chain with character. All three can be booked direct (Amandayan has best-rate guarantee on its site) or via Trip.com (where you can bundle with the LJG flight for the lowest package price).
  • **Comparable at mid-tier, cheaper at luxury.** A 7-day mid-range Bali honeymoon (private Ubud villa + Seminyak beachfront + spa + driver) runs $4,500-7,000 per couple. The equivalent Lijiang honeymoon (3 nights Amandayan + 2 nights Lijiang Old Town Inn + 1 day Jade Dragon private tour + spa) runs $3,500-5,000 per couple — slightly cheaper, but Lijiang is a slower-paced cultural experience while Bali is a beach + villa experience, so direct comparison is misleading. At the luxury tier, Lijiang has a strong edge: a 6-day Amandayan-focused honeymoon (5 nights Amandayan + private Shangri-La add-on + daily couple's spa + 2 private guided tours) runs $8,000-12,000 per couple, vs $10,000-18,000 for the equivalent Bali experience (Amandani Ubud + Bvlgari Uluwatu + Four Seasons Sayan + private driver + 4 spa sessions). Lijiang's value comes from the Aman pricing ($280/night vs $700-1,500/night for comparable Aman in Bali/Ubud/Phuket), the low cost of food and activities, and the lack of need for a private driver (the old town is fully walkable). The honest trade-off: Lijiang is culturally rich but lacks a beach, Bali has both. Pick Lijiang for culture + mountains + slow pace, pick Bali for beach + villa + spa accessibility.
