Kunming for foreigners

The Spring City — mild all year, and the natural gateway to Yunnan

Kunming is the "spring city": mild enough to walk in January and in July, which is why so many China itineraries use it as a base rather than a stop. It is the natural gateway to Yunnan — the road north toward Lijiang and Dali and the road east to the Stone Forest both start here — and the city itself rewards two days if you use one of them for the karst day trip.

Top things to do in Kunming

The must-see places locals will tell you are unmissable, with photos and a direct link to the in-depth guide for each.

Limestone pinnacles in the Stone Forest karst — part of the UNESCO South China Karst site.

Stone Forest (石林)

The one genuine day trip, 85–90 km and about 90 minutes out — and the reason most itineraries overnight in Kunming rather than passing through. ¥130 including the Karst Museum, plus an optional ¥25 electric shuttle cart for the longer loop. Allow a half day; the ticket covers the museum, so it rains or shines.

The Western Hills ridge rising above Dianchi Lake — the cliff face where the Dragon Gate grottoes are cut.

Western Hills & Dragon Gate (西山龙门)

The long ridge above Dianchi. You can walk onto the hillside for free; the ¥30 buys the Dragon Gate grottoes themselves — a Taoist cliff sanctuary begun in 1522 and not finished until 1853, with the main cutting done between 1781 and 1795. Half a day, and pair it with the shore road down afterwards.

The entrance archway of the Yunnan Nationalities Village, a curated park of 26 ethnic groups on the Dianchi shore.

Yunnan Nationalities Village (云南民族村)

A curated 26-group park on the Dianchi shore, ¥90. It is a genuine overview of the province's minority cultures and the easiest place to see several in an afternoon — but it is a summary, not a substitute for the villages themselves.

Green Lake in central Kunming — the city's shared living room, ringed by trees and paddle boats.

Green Lake Park (翠湖公园)

Free, and the city's shared living room rather than a sight — people chess, cards and tai chi from early morning. Black-headed gulls winter here roughly November to March. One to two hours is plenty unless it is gull season.

Yuantong Temple's golden-tiled halls and stone bridge — the calmest hour in central Kunming.

Yuantong Temple (圆通寺)

¥6, about an hour, and the calmest hour in central Kunming. The octopus pond and the gold statues are the draw; go early, before the tour groups from the city centre arrive.

The cypress-lined approach to the Golden Temple (金殿), a Ming-era Taoist complex in the northern hills.

Golden Temple (金殿)

¥25, two hours, up in the northern hills. A Ming-era bronze-roofed Taoist temple set in a cypress wood — the trees are older than the building. Half-day pace if you are also doing the Western Hills.

The entrance monument of the Yunnan Provincial Museum, a national first-class museum in central Kunming.

Yunnan Provincial Museum (云南省博物馆)

Free and the best wet-weather option in the city — bronze and lacquer from the Dian kingdoms, which is the context the rest of Yunnan makes sense against. Two hours; closed Mondays, like most Chinese state museums.

When to visit Kunming

January–April and October–December are the clearest months. November to March is when tens of thousands of black-headed gulls winter on Green Lake, which is the one reason to come outside the main season. Summer is the rainy season — it rarely rains all day, but put the indoor sights in the afternoons.
