How to use this card
- Save it before you travel. Download the whole pack from /rescue-cards/ and it works offline — no app, no data plan.
- Show the big Chinese line to whoever you are talking to. They read characters; the English at the bottom is for you.
- Say it out loud too if they hesitate. A spoken request gets a faster answer than a silent card, and repeating it removes all doubt.
- Read the English to understand the reply.
What they will likely say
- “不远,就在前面。” — Not far, it is just ahead.
- “有点远,你打车吧。” — It is a bit far — take a taxi.
- “就在那边,很近。” — It is over there, very close.
- “走过去大概二十分钟。” — About twenty minutes on foot.
Pro tips
- Point in the direction you want to go and then ask. A pointing gesture plus 远吗 (yuǎn ma) gets an answer more reliably than the card alone.
- Locals judge distance in walking minutes, not kilometres. If they say “near”, it usually means under 15 minutes.
- When two people give you different answers, ask a third — and the third answer is the one that is usually right.
